Movie Review – The Holiday

Today I went together with a few gal pals to see The Holiday.   We loved it!

If you are into chick flicks, this is definitely for you.  Leave the man at home and get your girlfriends together to go see this movie.   If you drag your man to see it, he’ll probably hate you for it.  You’ve been warned.

All four of the main actors in this movie play fantastic roles and are so well suited to them.

They even make Jack Black … well, sexy.  There, I said it.   It’s true, there’s something slightly sexy and endearing about his character in this film and it’s great to see him in a role that isn’t just completely ridiculous.   Don’t get me wrong, I’ve loved a lot of his movies and the roles he plays in them, but it was great to see a bit more sensitivity and romance from him for a change!

The girls play roles that are not at all uncommon to them.  Cute, quirky, and totally scattered with tons of baggage.  I was never really fond of Kate Winslet in any of her previous films but this one brought me around.  Both she and Cameron Diaz brought their characters to life and I think millions of women around the world will relate to their problems with men.

Another one I’ve never been particularly fond of was Jude Law.  He’s been the leading man in so many movies I’ve lost count and each and every time I sat there, squinted, tilted my head and tried desperately to see what made him so appealing.   It wasn’t until today that I saw it and I think it had more to do with the character he played and the situation than it actually had to do with him as an actor.

I’d go into more detail but I don’t want to spoil anything.   I’ll just say that part way through the movie I leaned over to my friend Penny and said “Holy shit, he’s so damn sexy” and she replied “OH yeah!”.   Never thought I’d be saying that about him, but I guess a good role can do it for anyone.

Oh and for those who have already seen it, this is one of the parts that cracked me up most, I have no idea why.   I guess because I’d probably react exactly the same way if I went out to my backyard and found a pool of my own!

Guess you had to be there…

  1. The Wife and I went to see this film yesterday and were bitterly disappointed.

We both found it slow and boring. About 45 minutes of footage could have been cut with the same end result.

We’d both rank it in the Top 3 worst films of 2006.

  2. Happy Christmas!
Hope that Rotterdam treats you well! Saw the movie, and yeah yeah its a chick-flick (I am a fella) But I loved it all the same! Gave me the sort of I-need-to-go-and-do-something-spontaneous-this-Christmas type of feeling!

    Next time I guess…

  3. I love Jack Black! Now I can’t wait for this movie to come to Malaysia :)
