Elemental Knitting Series (Water): Glacia Shawl Free Pattern

As I promised, I’m back with the pattern for my Glacia Shawl, the first instalment of my Elemental Knitting series. I hope you enjoy making it and that the newer knitters out there find it an interesting learning experience.

If you are visiting for the first time and are unfamiliar with the series or this shawl, please have a look at my reveal post where I explain how this shawl was designed to teach new knitters a bit more about increases and decreases and the affect they have on shawl shape and texture.

I won’t rehash everything I’ve gone through in my previous posts, as I’ve covered the shawl quite well already, and instead just get right on with the pattern! That’s what we’re all here for, right?!

Have fun!

Pattern Notes

Cast on & Bind off – It is recommended to use a cast off and bind off method that gives a bit of stretch, as this shawl will be blocked out to make the most of the lace sections. For my example I used a long tail cast on and Jeny’s Surprisingly Stretchy bind off.

Knot Stitch – When working row 19 of the knot stitch section, be sure to work the ( ) bracketed stitches loosely to ensure you can work them properly in the next row. If necessary, you can knit row 19 with a larger needle and switch back for row 20. When doing the k3tog tbl on row 20 I often found it easier to go into the first two stitches purlwise in the front, then swoop my left needle under and around the right needle to then catch the third loop in the back before knitting them all together though the back loop.

Finishing Instructions– Whirl yarn can vary slightly in regards to the weight and amount of yarn included in a ball. For this reason, and also due to your personal tension possibly being slightly different, I am giving finishing instructions rather than a set finishing point, so you can get the most out of your yarn if you wish.

If you would like to use as much of your yarn as possible, you can stop at any Garter Stitch Border section, stopping after the last right side row (row 37 or repeat of that row) and then casting off in place of your final wrong side row in that section. In my sample, I cast off at the end of the Garter Stitch Border section after the Right Side Leaning Eyelets, so my cast off was in place of Row 66.

If you would like your shawl to end in the way it began, so that you end on a section which looks mirrored to the beginning of your shawl, you will want to stop at row 37 and work your cast off on the wrong side instead of row 38.

  1. Hi
I’m having trouble with row 20. I’ve undone it all to the beginning twice and am losing heart. It would seem to me that the three stitches to be knitted together should be the three stitches formed by the k1, yo, k1 into the same stitch from the previous row, whereas I’m slipping the first of these three stitches and knitting together the remaining two plus the next slipped stitch., if you get what I mean.

Please can you confirm which is correct.

    Many thanks

    • Hi Gillian, I’m not entirely sure what you mean but here is how it should work.

On Row 19 you slip one stitch, in the next stitch you k1, yo, k1 (all within that same stitch), and repeat, slipping one stitch and then k1, yo, k1 into the following stitch. So on row 19, between your 5 edge stitches one each side, you should have a sequence of slipped stitches with the k1, yo, k1 all within the single stitches in between them.

On Row 20, you are slipping the same stitch that you slipped on row 19, and then knitting all three of those k1, yo, k1 together through the back loop.

      • Thanks Tammy. I’ve sorted it now. I think on both occasions I’d missed the kfb at the beginning of row 19!
        Onwards and upwards! Kind regards.

  2. I’m not understanding row 19 at all. When I finished with 19 and 20 I had 30 less stitches.. what am I doing wrong. The knit 1yoknit 1, matched up with the knit 3 tog. I’m thinking I am doing something wrong in row 19

    • Hi! Sorry for the slow reply, I was away for a few days. I’m really not sure where you may be going wrong! The pattern is correct, but without seeing you working it, it’s very difficult to know where you are making the mistake. I’m trying to think of what repeated mistake would add up to a decrease of 30 sts. So you count before starting row 19 and you have the 135 sts, but then you have only 105 sts after row 20? Is that correct?

  3. I am not understanding row 19 at all. When I do no. 20 it all fits but I have 30 less stitches. Thinking I’m miss understanding 19. I even asked a knitter friend and she couldn’t figure it out either

  4. Is there a correction on row 19 of water glacia shawl. I am ending with 7 stitches in the end of row not 6 Thank you for your help. Mary
