Sun Worship

Today I managed to snap this pic of Frick! having a bask…  He spends more time under his basking light than any of my other turtles, a true sun worshipper… even fake sun.

It’s hard to believe we have had him almost a year already.  He’s now approx 3.5 inches in length and soon, when he reaches 4 inches, we will be able to tell his gender for sure.  I just say ‘he’ but I have a sneaky suspicion that he’s a she.  Time will tell!

At the moment we are looking into a new turtle.  It will depend on if we are able to get our neighbour to watch them while we go back to Canada in the fall, otherwise it will have to wait until we get home as it’ll be too much of a pain to find care for them all.

It’s a Three Striped Mud Turtle (Kinosternon Baurii) and you can see photos here on chelonia.org.  They are very cute turtles that stay very small (between 3-4 inches in length) which is great because we already have an aquarium which is big enough for it to live in for life.  We have everything it needs actually.  This has been a big selling point for Xander, as he wasn’t too keen on having to buy a new aquarium and everything that came along with my other turtles.

Now I just have to talk the neighbour (not the crazy upstairs neighbour, our friendly next door neighbour) into watching them while we are away.  *crosses fingers*

  1. Beautiful turtle! I have been reading your blog since many days and I am finding it better day by day. When you are free, please check out my blog at http://lifeiscolorful.blogspot.com and give me suggestions if any.

  2. Oh he looks so cute.
I sent my friend a url of your album for this turtle.
It all came about when their turtle (which is huge) and is in a like 200 gal tank decided to lay eggs. BTW their turtle was Frick’s size when they got her.
They don’t have much of a basking area for her cuz she is so big. So the eggs were in the water and broke in there and you can imagine the mess.
I told her what you guys did with the upper basking area and I sent her the url so she could see what you have done. Her name is Cheryl just in case she comments.
