Turtle Yoga

Usually the turtles will slide off their basking spot if they see you coming.  That’s how they got their name… sliders.  Frick! is a Yellow Belly Slider and Radar is a Red Ear Slider.  They bask in the sun (or under a heat lamp in this case) and if they see anyone coming they just slide off into the water.

Last night though, Frick! let me get close enough to take a photo of him doing his turtle yoga under the light.

Turtle Yoga

He obviously was keeping a very close eye on me, to make sure I wasn’t up to no good, but it definately shows that he is getting more used to having me around.

The other night I noticed Radar trying to bite him. That worried me quite a lot as I know RES turtles can get sort of aggressive at times. I’ve posted on a few different turtle forums asking advice. Some have suggested that we seperate them, which isn’t really an option as we don’t have another tank.

If it continues we are going to have no choice but to take Radar back where we got him and keep Frick! alone. Which isn’t a problem for Frick!, as it turns out turtles are more solitary than social. It would be a problem for me though, I really like Radar too, although I do like him slightly less whenever I see him picking on Frick!.

Time will tell!

  1. Okay, that is the world’s coolest turtle.

And turtle’s are generally pretty cool.

  2. Hopefully Radar will learn his manners soon! May have to build a little time out corner ;)

  3. That is an awesome photo!

  4. Oooooweeehhhh, that’s a limber turtle!

  5. That is a GREAT photo. I wonder what that pose is called?

  6. I hope that they continue to get along overall, but do keep an eye on the situation. If there’s anyway that you can get another tank I’d do that.

A very good reptile forum is http://www.herpcenter.com I’m a moderator there (but haven’t been there for a while). Lots of turtle (and other reptile people) there who can help you out and perhaps help you come up with a housing solution.

Great photo! Frick is really cute. Love the leg stretch!

My boxies have gotten very used to us and they even look around when we call their names or make certain noises (whistles) that they recognize. If you want to see some pics of them go to my gardening blog http://www.feverishthoughts.com/garden/
