HUP HOLLAND HUP!!

Stop the world, I wanna get off…. I’m about to tell you all something very disturbing, very disturbing indeed.

I think I like football.. as in, soccer.

Yesterday I was playing with one of my new widgets* which keeps track of what is on TV here in NL. As I was flicking to the channels checking to see if it had the correct info, I passed by one of the BBC stations showing the football match. I stopped on it for a second as I’d noticed the amount of orange in the crowd and commented to Xander about the amount of Dutchies in Germany for the match. Then I noticed that when they panned out there was so much orange in the crowd it looked like the stadium had orange seats and hardly anyone showed up.

Then the game started, and I watched it for two seconds… and couldn’t stop. I don’t know what came over me, but I couldn’t turn the channel or take my attention away from the game. Back and forth, they went.. up and down that field… over and over, and I was watching every step. It was as though I was afraid to look away in case that ONE kick actually went in the net. Even though out of all the kicks only ONE did, but at least it was ours!**

I’ve been walking by this sign every year at this time for I don’t know how many years and it hasn’t meant anything to me. That’s a lie, it meant that it was that time of year again when I’d jump out of my skin when the air horns and guns to off randomly. I never gave a witches tit about football and didn’t get for the life of me why anyone else did, but now I do! As much as I hate to admit it, I’ll be watching it again… and at some point I’ll probably buy something orange to hang from my balcony. Maybe a few glasses with orange stuff on it… I mean, if you can’t beat ’em, right?!

Now I actually like the toilet paper I bought last week with the little orange puppies kicking around orange soccerballs, that I bought because it was cheap even though I thought it was stupid. Now I’m not a cheapskate posing as a footie fan, I actually am one. Wicked.

I mean my oranje toilet paper isn’t so bad compared to some…

Like these people who totally covered their house with orange paper and other deco. I figure they probably did it for one of those competitions like whoever has the most deco wins a car or whatever. In some ways I think it’s kind of cool as it is so DUTCH, on the other hand I think … ok, yeah I just realized there isn’t an other hand. I think it’s something that I’d never really see anywhere else that makes Holland, Holland. Don’t be surprised if I am posting photos one year from now showing my orange balconies.
* I discovered desktop widgets this weekend and have had a great time playing with them and setting them up on my computer. I first saw widgets on Gail’s supercool Mac laptop thingie and was intrigued! I just happened across the windows version yesterday and have a bit of widgetmania at the moment.

** Oh my god, I just said “ours”!! Am I starting to consider myself a true “Nederlander”? *Gasp*
