Bones

If you remember, a while back I read a few books by Kathy Reich’s. The books were about a forensic anthropologist named Temperance Brennan.   I didn’t like the books at all and I really didn’t like the main character.   I found it weird because the books got so many great reviews but I ranked them among the worst I’ve read.

When my friend Shirley Ann told me how great the TV show Bones is I turned my nose up at it because I knew that the show was based on these books.  She was so adamant about it though that I decided to download the first season and check it out.   It didn’t hurt that guy from angel is in it as well… at least if the show sucked I’d have some eye candy.

I’m quite surprised by the show, I think I like it.   The main character is the same, but she isn’t exactly like in the books.   She’s independent and socially awkward but she isn’t as obnoxiously independent and abrasive.

She’s also younger.  In the books she’s middle aged with a broken marriage and a child, but in the TV shows she’s in her 30’s with no children and no mention of a broken marriage yet.   She also has more support characters in the TV show which adds a bit of charm to it that was missing in the books.

Usually I tend to find that movies and TV shows don’t really live up to the books they are based on, like The Da Vinci Code.  Bones is quite the opposite though, the TV show has much more to offer than the books do.

  1. I found that to be the case with “The Notebook” as well. It was so poorly written I found it surprising that the movie was done so well in comparision.

  2. Michaela Conlin who plays Angela Montenegro on Bones was one of my residents at NYU when I was an RA there. We shared many a glass of wine talking about her acting plans. It’s awesome to see it worked out for her.

    Good luck in the battle.

  3. So I wanted to get your RSS feed, and I found the comment RSS feed, but I didn’t find one for your posts. Am I just blind?

  4. I was looking for another author within the forensic genre after finishing with Patricia Cornwell when i decided to try my luck with Kathy Reichs. Disappointed I was. I shall stick to Michael Connelly with his washed out investigator Harry Bosch. Whinny Tempe Brennan dont deserve my time.

  5. I love this show and have watched this one for awhile. It’s he guy in it from angel is hot. David is his name and he was awesome in buffy as well. This is such a great show and had no idea it was based on books.

  6. I haven’t read the stuff or watched the show, not really my kind of subject matter…but it’s surprising that for once a tv show manages not only to live up to but exceed the standards.

  7. I never read the Kathy Reichs books myself, and have thought about picking one up, only because everyone keeps raving about them. But I think I’ll stick with the show.

Bones is just a great show. I love the forensic stuff though so that only figures that I would like this show.
