Stone Washed Sophie: Yarn Delivery

I need another WIP like I need a hole in the head, but there are some projects that are just too hard to resist.  I planned to dial it back and try to get my WIP’s under control, but then I discovered Sophie’s Universe, a CAL that was put on by Dedri, one of our fellow Scheepjes bloggers.  I missed out on the CAL but after seeing the finished product, I had to do it, so all my plans of cutting back went straight out the window.  Blah blah, good intentions, blah blah… whatever… YARN!!

I knew I wanted to make the larger version (because I have a mad love affair with the Stone Washed yarns), but hummed and hawed for a while over the colours. I came up with a few ideas, saw some that I liked on Ravelry (including a really stunning version done in only black, white, grey and red), but in the end I decided that there was just no beating the original combination put together by Dedri.  So, I went with that!

I’m glad I went with this choice because there was something about every other combination I put together that didn’t work and I now realize that it’s that it wasn’t THIS combination.  I so wanted to be original and come up with something really fantastic, ya know?  Some combination that would bring the Sophie to an entirely new level and make me a superstar of the massive Sophie following, but yeah, that just wasn’t going to happen because there just simply isn’t a better combination to be made (in my opinion).  It makes me shake my fist at Dedri in envy of her mad colour choosing skills.  I SHAKE MY FIST AT YOU, DEDRI!

CANADA JADE!  I know what you’re thinking – um, ok, who cares?!  Well, me, for one, because there’s something about being an expat that’s made me as excited as a six year old finding my name on a gas station keychain when I see “Canada” on things.

I’m not sure if you’ve noticed these little tags on the newer Scheepjes yarns but they are so simple and genius, it makes you wonder how nobody has ever thought of it before. They are easy start tags that help you pull from the center of the ball.  I hate using the yarn from the outside of the ball, as it causes it to flip and roll and eventually go off the sofa and get covered in dog hair, because I always put off vacuuming as long as humanly possible.

Pulling from the middle can, if you are anything like me, often end in serious yarn vomit.  You wiggle your fingers around in there, thinking you’ve grabbed just the right place and then when you pull it out, you realise you were wrong… so, wrong.  Yes, as I reread my previous sentence I am aware that without context, that it could also sound so, so wrong!  Anyway, moving on!  This little tag helps you avoid all of that mess by giving you something to make it easier to find that end.   You grab for the paper rather than blinding wiggling your fingers around in hopes of grabbing the right strand of yarn.  Pretty clever, right?

I’ve been making good progress on my Sophie, but I had to put it down in order to finish other projects.  People say it’s addictive and they aren’t kidding, I could have happily crocheted away at it until it was finished… and I’m not even that big of a crochet lover.  I’ll be back with photos of my progress as soon as I whittle down my WIP pile a little (just leave me to my pipedreams, please)!

  1. If (oh who am I kidding. WHEN.) I decide to start my Sophie’s universe I will be using the stonewashed too. Oh my how much do I love that yarn. :) And most likely I’ll stick with the original colours. Why try to improve perfection :) Can’t wait to see yours :) Enjoy

  2. Haha. Stop shaking your fist at me!
