Milieupark

This weekend I made my first trip to a Milieupark!  It’s basically a dump.  We had a lot of building materials from the renovations, pieces of our old kitchen and packaging for our new one and having it all in the house was making me nuts.

I know a trip to the dump doesn’t sound exciting but I was surprised with what was waiting for me when I got there!  When I think of going to the dump I imagine this:

dump2

I haven’t been to the dump much in Canada, I think the last time I visited one I was probably about 12 years old but this is what I remember.  A never ending stinky heap of trash.   It was DISGUSTING!

When Xander mentioned taking all the crap in the house to the dump I groaned and was so not looking forward to it.   I couldn’t believe it when we drove up to something more like this:

dump

THAT is our local dump! It’s small and tucked away in an industrial area about 2 minutes from our house. You drive up and a guy asks what sort of trash you have then tells you which bins to put it in, then you pull your car up to it and toss all the junk into the bins and you are done. It’s free, easy and best of all… almost clean! There was no smell, no slimy crap under your feet and there were even guys walking around to help you if you needed it.

Every so often they compact the trash and then it’s ready to be filled up again, it’s dead handy and is so well thought out and practical.  It’s just so DUTCH to do it this way.  With their lack of space I guess they really can’t afford to have the massive dumps like we have back in North America, but I think they also do it this way simply because it’s more environmentally friendly and just generally less gross.

Milieupark means environment park when translated and this is another thing to add to my growing list of things I love about this country.

  1. Ah! I realize this was 3 years ago, but I had the same reaction when we went to the milieupark for the first time too! I mean, it’s a weird thing to say, but I love the Dutch Dump! All these little containers, a specific place for everything, clean and good for the environment… yeah, milieupark!

Yeah, that’s what it’s like here, too now, in Canada. Been that way for quite a while in Cambridge.

  3. Wow. I would love to move there too if only for a “dump” like that.
