Gunky Ears

That’s apparently what has been wrong with Harley lately.   I noticed the other day when I took him out of his cage that his ears looked dry and ‘gunky’ so I went to one of my hedgehog forums to ask what to do about it.

The advice I got was to give him an oatmeal bath and rub either nipple cream, vaseline or vitamin-e lotion on his ears.  Since I’m not in the habit of keeping nipple cream around the house and don’t have vaseline either, I went for the vitamin-e oil.

After his bath I wrapped him in a towel to keep him warm and had a cuddle with him while I watched a movie.

He laid in the towel on my chest for hours as I hung out on the sofa, watched movies and even when I fell asleep he stayed there asleep too.

He looks so prickly and scary to some people but he can be so cute and cuddly.

  1. Wow! I didn’t even know there was such a small hedgehog. I love hedgehogs normally , but Harley is even more dangerous cute – if that’s possible :-)

I do hope he’s ears getting better!

  2. I’m so glad I asked, thanks for educating me on the finer points of African Pygmy Hedgehogs.

  3. Harley is an African Pygmy Hedgehog, which is different to the European Hedgehogs we have in the wild here and in the UK.

They are much smaller and much cuter! hehe

His quills don’t get sharper as he gets older, they were plenty sharp when he was a baby too! They are pokey but they don’t break the skin just by touching them.

I will be able to keep him as a pet for as long as he lives :)

  4. I think he is adorable. Hedge hogs stay small, don’t they? I am asking because of what Dave asked up there. I didn’t think that the got big like porcupines.

  5. Very cute little Harley you got there ;-)

What happens when it’s mature and the quills are sharp little daggers?

Will you be able to keep it as a pet or can you donate it to a Zoo?

    Just curious…

  7. Harley!! I haven’t seen you for so long (picture wise…lol)!

Get better baby, Kazz and Lily had the same thing…

  8. I never though a of a hedgehog for a pet but looks like he is right at home. And what the hell is nipple cream and is that what is called in the stores? “Yes, exscuse me I am looking for some nipple cream for my hedgehog, he has gunky ears.”

  9. Aaawwwwww…. Hope He’s better soon as well!

  10. How did you end up keeping a hedgehog as a pet? They are wild over here (England). There’s one comes and hangs round the front of my house sometimes, they make cute noises and are friendly animals I know, but I never thought of keeping one in the house. :)

  11. Oh he’s so sweet! I wish we could have hedgehogs in California, but we can’t. I do have parrots that I love and they fall asleep on me just like Harley does!
