Ewww Worms!

fishsick4 Ugh, my guppies have parasites!

I have been keeping guppies and trying to breed them as feeder fish for my turtles.  As you can see, this poor dude has been chased a few times and the turtles did manage to catch his tail.

The other day I noticed these white things on a few of the fish (which look greenish brown in the photo for some reason) and after looking it up online and taking him to the pet shop to have them look it, it turns out they have Anchor Worms – ugh!!

Fuck me, if it isn’t my luck that this would happen.  Apparently they are most common in pond fish like Koi and are fairly rare in guppies.   I think they were carried in on some pond plants I got for the turtle tank though.  *swears profusely*

It’s funny because I’ll actually pick up THESE worms (mealworms) every day to feed them to my hedgehog and am not fussed by it at all.  Yet these parasites on my fish totally creep me the fuck out!! I don’t even have to touch them and they make me itchy all over.

Thankfully these appear to be parasites that my turtles can’t catch.  Had the guppies been able to pass them on to the turts, I would have been pissed.   For now I have quarantined the fish (along with a whole batch of new baby guppies argh) in my 60L tank but still have to treat both tanks with this anti parasite shit.

It had better work or I’m flushing the bastards and starting over.

  1. I think an aquarium product called Copper Safe will kill the anchor worms.

  2. It is posible to remove the worms directly with tweezers just don’t break of the heads(worms or fish), and make sure your hand is wet when handling the fish so you don’t damage any scales, then treat with antiseptic.

  3. Ewwww… I had a similar problem with my “pet”… meaning The Kid… But I actually had to check his production in the toilet to see whether my suspicions were true… !!! EEEWWWWWW!!! (Thank God for ONCE for those Dutch toilets though, LOL).

    Good luck on the guppy’s!

  4. Ugh, it’s been 2 days and the worms are still hanging on! The guy at the pet store said it could take up to a week to see results. Those things give me serious heebie jeebies!!

Danette, you do have a good point. I remember years ago when one of our dogs had worms and used to scoot across the carpet on his ass. I think I still didn’t mind that as much as these damn worms though!!

  5. Worms of any sort gross me out. The girlfriend feeds her sugar gliders mealies, and the normally cute gliders get all crazy and ravenous, grabbing a worm in each paw double-fisting style. After chowing down, they’ll lick their little paws of any spilled mealie juice. Ewwwww…

  6. Well tanks and aquariums are hard to keep up in general so im told. In either case, my god you are still on 25peeps!
    just an fyi ;)

  7. Ohh, that is so yuck! I hope that parasite treatment works, and fast, for you (and them!!)!!

  8. Argh, groooosss….. that’s like a dog with worms.

Only the fish can’t scrape their arses on the carpet, so there, one good thing?

    Hope the pests die soon….

  10. Worms are gross unless you are using them for bait…otherwise they suck! That is an awesome photo though. Did you take that yourself?

I just got shivers…not because of your obvious excellent photo skills but the worms are creeping me out man!! ARGH!

I’m actually here to see who freaked out about the BAM stuff. I don’t usually sniff out drama but I’m bored and it’s Tuesday.

    *hug* Get those guppies well.

  11. I have forwarded this post to my friend Rohani who has some expertise in these matters

  12. I don’t think they actually harm the fish. They eat whatever crumbs the fish drops. But what do I know. They might be worms from Ogalobod the terrible Alien from planet Ogo.

oh and…OMG UR TOES R TEH HAWT, POST MOR!! hahahaha /cackle throat fetish weirdos
