Jumpy Much?

The above video was taken this evening just after 8pm.  It’s our Remembrance Day (Dodenherdenking) in the Netherlands today and during a 2 minute silence at Dam Square in Amsterdam panic broke out.  There are a number of stories in regards to what started it all, someone screaming, becoming unwell and knocking a barrier over, knocking over some baggage, talking on their mobile, or arguing. Who knows, but regardless…whatever it was it scared the bejesus out of a lot of people.

All I know is, I wouldn’t want to be the person who started it. Especially if it was someone on their mobile or just acting out.  Way to show your respect jackass.

Who can blame them really, being so close to the royal family after what happened last year.

On Queen’s Day (Koninginnedag, a Dutch holiday celebrating the Queen’s Birthday) 2009 celebrations ended badly when a disturbed man drove through a barricade and the crowd in an attempt to attack the royal family. In the end he died and took a number of others with him.  It was a very sad and tragic day in the Netherlands.

So who wouldn’t be jumpy this year, even just a little.

Here is the video from the Queen’s Day Parade last year.

Hopefully nobody was too badly hurt in the panic this year, and more than anything, lets hope that maybe next year the spring celebrations will go by with a little less drama.

  1. I’m not surprised it happened in a way. Everyone is so on edge in general now days with terrorism and with what happened on Queen’s Day last year. It’s easy for the simplest of things that can be conceived as or is suspicious to spark a panic like that.

  2. I was sort of stunned to read about it this morning and see the video. I was nearby (but attending a totally different event) and was impressed that even at a concert venue they observed the two minutes of silence (show hadn’t started yet). Sad that this happened, and even worse that people got injured in the melée. Hopefully the injuries weren’t too bad. It was kind of interesting seeing the Queen sort of take a deep breath and try to shake off the nerves when she returned.

  3. Just like Sonya, I was watching it as well when it happened, together with my best friend and we were both like WTF! The tears were close, because I thought it would be such a sick thing to do there, after last year, but it also shows such a disrespect to those who gave their lives so that we could live…that disgusts me! So the tears were from shock and anger…

  4. I was watching tv when it happend and freaked out because I didn’t know what was going on. Edwin was gone and my dutch is no where near good enough to catch anything anyone said..Im just glad everyone is ok.
