Dead Like Me – The Movie!

deadlikeme2

If you have never heard of the show Dead Like Me, it’s not really a big surprise.  It was one of those oddities, like Firefly, that doesn’t run for long but is mysteriously canceled, causing an uproar among fans.  It has a cult following and those who loved it loved it madly… including me.

Here is a synopsis of the show (in case you are too lazy to click links).

Dead Like Me takes a darkly comic look at mortality through the eyes of someone stuck between this life and the afterlife. "Bail bondsmen for the disembodied" is how Rube (Mandy Patinkin), the often exasperated Reaper foreman, explains it to disaffected 18-year-old George (Ellen Muth) after she’s vaporized by a falling toilet seat from the Mir space station and drafted into the ranks of the Reapers. It’s now her job to take the souls of the doomed, preferably before their mortal coil is damaged beyond recognition by the devilish machinations of the gremlin-like gravelings.

You wouldn’t mistake George’s fellow Reapers for the do-gooders of Touched by an Angel, but they are anything but grim. Charming British shyster Mason (Callum Blue) always has some scam brewing, high-living, fun-loving former flapper Betty (Rebecca Gayheart) treats death as a cabaret ("Reaping Havoc"), and one-time starlet and wannabe actress Daisy (Laura Harris) still nurses her dreams of stardom. Even hard-bitten meter maid Roxy (Jasmine Guy) manages to find a way to let loose.

Dead Like Me puts a light touch on black comedy, but it has a sneaky way of using humor to explore loss, loneliness, and regret, as well as kindness, and courage, and responsibility. George gets a hard lesson when she tries to wriggle out of her assignments like some overgrown kid, only to see the damage of her (in)action in "Reapercussions." And as George’s angry, tightly-wound mother (Cynthia Stevenson) and withdrawn little sister Reggie cope with death, she breaks the rules to watch over them: their own pouty, glum guardian angel. There’s nothing like your own death to put your life into perspective.

I had been watching this show again recently after telling my friend Penny about it.   I was curious about what Ellen Muth had been up to since the show ended so I looked her up on IMDB, where I found out that there is going to be a DEAD LIKE ME MOVIE!!   This is going to be great!

Here’s a trailer.

I absolutely cannot wait to see it.  I’ve missed these guys and their quirks and nutty situations.  I love that they are making movies from all these TV shows we loved and missed.   Like Firefly with Serenity and the recent Sex and the City movie.

I will be going to this movie for sure, now I just have to wait… because it’s listed as coming out in 2009 but is also still in production so who knows.

If you are interested in watching the show you can buy the DVD’s here at Amazon or download them here at Mininova.   Trust me, you’ll love it!

  1. I agree about Mandy Patinkin. This will be two shows now that he’s left high and dry. First Criminal Minds and now this. That’s the problem with having an actor like him in a show, it’s just not the same without him if he leaves.

  2. I’m annoyed that Mandy Patinkin won’t be in it, though. And I know they’ve been talking about the movie for over a year now, so I’m hoping that it eventually gets released, even if it’s straight to DVD.

  3. Glad to see other fans out there. It looks like most of the original cast will be in the movie other than the original Daisy Adaire and Mandy Patinkin. I’m sat that M.D. won’t be in it but won’t really miss Daisy much. It will be interesting to see how the new girl plays the part.

I’m just glad that George and the other Lass’s + Mason / Roxy will all be the original actors!

  4. Can’t wait!

  8. WHOHOOO!!! Hello Mason .. YUM! I love this show, I was watching it back home when they cancelled it on me. Happy??? NO!! It is brilliantly written, the humour is so dry it entertains through out the whole show. I’ve seen all the episodes, twice or three times.
    God I miss it.

    But YA to the movie!
