{"id":883,"date":"2008-05-26T18:38:17","date_gmt":"2008-05-26T16:38:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.breigh.com\/wordpress\/archives\/883"},"modified":"2010-05-26T21:42:30","modified_gmt":"2010-05-26T19:42:30","slug":"thuis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.canadutch.nl\/blog\/archives\/883","title":{"rendered":"Thuis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Thuis means home in Dutch.\u00a0 It&#8217;s been a while since I did some before and after shots of some of the renovations we&#8217;ve done so far.\u00a0 So I thought I&#8217;d play catch up.<\/p>\n<p>Our most recent is the dining room, this is how it&#8217;s looked over the years:<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Diningroom 2001 by Breigh.com, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/breigh\/214919324\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm1.static.flickr.com\/64\/214919324_7711e627de.jpg\" alt=\"Diningroom 2001\" width=\"500\" height=\"442\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This photo was taken sometime in 2000, the year we moved in.\u00a0 It wasn&#8217;t a dining room at all, rather a massive pile of computers.\u00a0\u00a0 Yeah, that&#8217;s me, probably playing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uoherald.com\/kingdomreborn\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ultima Online<\/a> at the time.\u00a0 The pic was taken with a shitpot digital camera we had at the time.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Diningroom 2003 by Breigh.com, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/breigh\/214919437\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm1.static.flickr.com\/86\/214919437_dd9212bf86.jpg\" alt=\"Diningroom 2003\" width=\"500\" height=\"438\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This was in 2003 (I know because I can see the cage in the livingroom which means Bailey was still a puppy, and now he&#8217;s 5).\u00a0 By that time we separated our computer desks for a bit of tidy factor and re-assembled the too ugly for words, massive, square dining table the guy who lived here before us left.\u00a0 Together with some cheap Ikea chairs and some plants that are long since dead, we had an actual dining room.\u00a0\u00a0 Can you see the pink trim?<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Diningroom Reno in progress by Breigh.com, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/breigh\/214919305\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm1.static.flickr.com\/89\/214919305_519688191e.jpg\" alt=\"Diningroom Reno in progress\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Then, in 2005, we bought the place and the real changes started happening. The first thing to go was the pink trim, which was replaced with &#8216;Lily White&#8217; and the white walls were given a bit of color to warm them up.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"One Year Ago by Breigh.com, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/breigh\/2521311065\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2255\/2521311065_19a9312b17.jpg\" alt=\"One Year Ago\" width=\"500\" height=\"371\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In March of 2007 our dining room looked like this.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve always wanted a table with a pedestal leg and I found one I loved at Ikea.\u00a0 In this photo it was being used for cutting my quilting fabrics.\u00a0\u00a0 Together with Xander&#8217;s desk, and our rat cage,\u00a0 it made for quite a bit of clutter sometimes.\u00a0 Plus, I didn&#8217;t like having the rats so close to the table&#8230; err, not that we ever actually eat that the table.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Our New Ikea Curtains by Breigh.com, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/breigh\/2521755670\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2255\/2521755670_7d4014cf9e.jpg\" alt=\"Our New Ikea Curtains\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is the dining room today.\u00a0\u00a0 A new blind and some ikea curtains, my new hutch and Ikea table, together with one of my turtle tanks and terrarium.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a lot of stuff to have in one room but it&#8217;s cozy and I love it.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s one part of Expat life that I think is extremely important.\u00a0 Making your new house a home.
