{"id":793,"date":"2008-02-02T18:24:22","date_gmt":"2008-02-02T16:24:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.breigh.com\/wordpress\/archives\/793"},"modified":"2008-08-07T20:52:50","modified_gmt":"2008-08-07T18:52:50","slug":"saturday-photo-hunt-narrow","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.canadutch.nl\/blog\/archives\/793","title":{"rendered":"Saturday Photo Hunt &#8211; Narrow"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a rel=\"tag\" href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tags\/photohunt\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"rating\" src=\"http:\/\/www.breigh.com\/blogpics\/photohuntersm.png\" alt=\"\" align=\"left\" \/><\/a>One of the things that was difficult to get used to when I moved to the Netherlands was how narrow the houses are here.\u00a0 Like in this photo I took in Amsterdam in 1999.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Mom Houses\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/36166632@N00\/153504492\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/static.flickr.com\/49\/153504492_2f77b04b17.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Mom Houses\" width=\"502\" height=\"372\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s easy to understand, with such a huge population in such a small space.\u00a0\u00a0 Over 16.5 million people in a country that is slightly less than twice the size of New Jersey.\u00a0\u00a0 Of that 16.5 million people, almost 600,000 live our city of Rotterdam, being beaten only by Amsterdam at almost 750,000.<\/p>\n<p>Another thing that factors into the lack of space is the amount of water here.\u00a0\u00a0 A portion of every city in the Netherlands is taken up by water, whether it&#8217;s Amsterdam&#8217;s canals or Rotterdam&#8217;s harbours and while many people do actually live on the water in houseboats and the like, it does cut back on the space we have to build on.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s part of the charm here though, isn&#8217;t it?\u00a0\u00a0 The Netherlands just wouldn&#8217;t be the same without our crazy narrow houses.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One of the things that was difficult to get used to when I moved to the Netherlands was how narrow the houses are here.\u00a0 Like in this photo I took in Amsterdam in 1999.
