{"id":763,"date":"2008-01-02T13:37:51","date_gmt":"2008-01-02T11:37:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.breigh.com\/wordpress\/archives\/763"},"modified":"2008-01-02T13:37:51","modified_gmt":"2008-01-02T11:37:51","slug":"new-years-makeover","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.canadutch.nl\/blog\/archives\/763","title":{"rendered":"New Years Makeover"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>That sounds so glamorous doesn&#8217;t it?&nbsp;&nbsp; You&#8217;d never think it means that I spent new years day playing in the dirt!&nbsp; Did you really think it meant I was off getting a facial or something?&nbsp; Eish, you don&#8217;t know me at all!<\/p>\n<p>I spent most of the day yesterday washing out 25 kilos (55 pounds) of sand for my 360 liter turtle tank.&nbsp;&nbsp; I used to keep bare bottoms on all my tanks because I thought it was easier to clean AND because the other turtle keepers on the American forums rave about sand being so dangerous.&nbsp; They go on and on about turtles eating sand and becoming impacted and dying.&nbsp; Scared the bejesus out of me.<\/p>\n<p>Then I was <em>schooled <\/em>by some friends on the Dutch turtle forums.&nbsp;&nbsp; Basically, don&#8217;t listen to the silly Americans, they think EVERYTHING is dangerous. haha&nbsp; (sorry guys!)<\/p>\n<p>I argued with them for a while, as I&#8217;d been completely brainwashed against sand in turtle tanks, but after being told by pretty much every Dutch turtle keeper I know that they&#8217;ve always used sand with no problem, I figured maybe they were right.&nbsp;&nbsp; From what I can tell from research on both forums, the Americans talk about impaction and dangers of sand a lot but when I asked about it, they all said they <em>heard about it <\/em>but not a single person had any experience with it themselves.&nbsp;&nbsp; Turtle myth?&nbsp; I dunno&#8230; I&#8217;m sure it has probably happened at some point, but that&#8217;s kind of like not giving kids bikes because somewhere, sometime, someone&#8217;s kid was hit by a car.<\/p>\n<p>So, here&#8217;s the before and after&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"New Tank!\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/36166632@N00\/482998201\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"325\" alt=\"New Tank!\" src=\"http:\/\/static.flickr.com\/195\/482998201_7b57a87dcd.jpg\" width=\"450\" border=\"0\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s hard to believe I actually thought that looked good.&nbsp;&nbsp; How boring and bare!! argh&#8230; <\/p>\n<p>This is what it looks like now!<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Redecorated 360 Liter\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/36166632@N00\/2156078980\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"300\" alt=\"Redecorated 360 Liter\" src=\"http:\/\/static.flickr.com\/2334\/2156078980_fe06f149ee.jpg\" width=\"450\" border=\"0\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Big improvement, if I do say so myself!&nbsp; The turts seem to love it as well, they spend a lot of time digging around the bottom now, keeps them from getting bored I suppose.&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>Once we get an above tank basking area made for them, this tank will be complete.&nbsp;&nbsp; Hopefully we&#8217;ll get that done sometime before the spring.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wlWriterSmartContent\" id=\"scid:0767317B-992E-4b12-91E0-4F059A8CECA8:2ddd9bd7-82af-4e9b-a69d-5f910ed89a8f\" style=\"padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; margin: 0px; padding-top: 0px\">Technorati Tags: <a href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tags\/Pets\" rel=\"tag\">Pets<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tags\/Turtles\" rel=\"tag\">Turtles<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tags\/Aquarium\" rel=\"tag\">Aquarium<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tags\/Schildpadden\" rel=\"tag\">Schildpadden<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tags\/Schildpad\" rel=\"tag\">Schildpad<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tags\/Dieren\" rel=\"tag\">Dieren<\/a><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>That sounds so glamorous doesn&#8217;t it?&nbsp;&nbsp; You&#8217;d never think it means that I spent new years day playing in the dirt!&nbsp; Did you really think it meant I was off getting a facial or something?&nbsp; Eish, you don&#8217;t know me at all!
