{"id":691,"date":"2007-07-30T22:31:07","date_gmt":"2007-07-30T20:31:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.breigh.com\/wordpress\/archives\/691"},"modified":"2007-07-30T22:35:59","modified_gmt":"2007-07-30T20:35:59","slug":"the-cities-of-my-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.canadutch.nl\/blog\/archives\/691","title":{"rendered":"The Cities of My Life"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I was looking at a group on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\" target=\"_blank\">Facebook<\/a>&nbsp;today and saw an aerial photo of my hometown. (( HOMESICK!! ))&nbsp;Then I started looking for photos of other places I&#8217;ve lived&#8230; <\/p>\n<p>This is my home town of North Sydney, on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia.&nbsp; It looks so small to me now but growing up it was my entire world.&nbsp; It&#8217;s still as beautiful now as it was then.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Photo Sharing\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/breigh\/955033952\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"355\" alt=\"North Sydney, Nova Scotia\" src=\"http:\/\/farm2.static.flickr.com\/1110\/955033952_4e4b0d02fc.jpg\" width=\"480\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When I was 21 I left Cape Breton and moved to Charlottetown, PEI.&nbsp; Another small island but much different than Cape Breton.&nbsp; More of a holiday destination mainly thanks to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anne_of_Green_Gables\" target=\"_blank\">Anne of Green Gables<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Photo Sharing\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/breigh\/954178945\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"288\" alt=\"ctown\" src=\"http:\/\/farm2.static.flickr.com\/1429\/954178945_43e4b520e6.jpg\" width=\"480\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After two years I decided I&#8217;d had enough of small towns on small islands and wanted to experience big city life.&nbsp; That&#8217;s when I left for Toronto&#8230; I loved it from the start. I still love it and miss it all the time.&nbsp; I feel like I didn&#8217;t do as much as I would have liked while I was there.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Photo Sharing\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/breigh\/955031572\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"338\" alt=\"toronto\" src=\"http:\/\/farm2.static.flickr.com\/1271\/955031572_a70305a400.jpg\" width=\"480\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In 1999 I left Toronto and Canada for my new home, Rotterdam in the Netherlands.&nbsp; It&#8217;s taken some getting used to but over the years I&#8217;ve learned to appreciate this new city of mine and I think it&#8217;s a shame that it lives in the shadows of Amsterdam&#8217;s popularity and fame.&nbsp; It&#8217;s a beautiful city in its own right with more modern architecture and great shopping&#8230; not better than Amsterdam or any other city in Holland, just different.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Photo Sharing\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/breigh\/955030520\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"239\" alt=\"rdam2\" src=\"http:\/\/farm2.static.flickr.com\/1223\/955030520_91490b4799.jpg\" width=\"480\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Sometimes I try to see Rotterdam through the eyes of someone who&#8217;s never seen it before, someone from back in Cape Breton who has never seen any of Holland, it&#8217;s weird buildings or wacky culture.&nbsp; I like to do it because it gives me a rush of that old excitement I used to get when I was first here.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s sometimes nicer than looking through my own eyes which have grown accustomed to it all and often forgets how lucky I am to be able to see these things at all. <\/p>\n<p>One thing I never thought I&#8217;d ever see in my lifetime is this&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Photo Sharing\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/breigh\/684592370\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"384\" alt=\"Amsterdam\" src=\"http:\/\/farm2.static.flickr.com\/1309\/684592370_0516744c05.jpg\" width=\"480\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Unless someone decided to rename <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Glace_Bay\" target=\"_blank\">Glace Bay<\/a>, I mean.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I was looking at a group on Facebook&nbsp;today and saw an aerial photo of my hometown.
