{"id":4890,"date":"2010-05-27T23:42:21","date_gmt":"2010-05-27T21:42:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.breigh.com\/wordpress\/?p=4890"},"modified":"2010-05-27T23:52:53","modified_gmt":"2010-05-27T21:52:53","slug":"the-veggie-files-signs-of-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.canadutch.nl\/blog\/archives\/4890","title":{"rendered":"The Veggie Files &#8211; Signs of Life!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A while back I <a href=\"http:\/\/www.breigh.com\/wordpress\/archives\/4125\" target=\"_blank\">got a package<\/a> in the mail from Xander\u2019s step-mother which included seeds for growing cucumber, lettuce and beans.\u00a0 Not just any old kind, but the <em>urban kind <\/em>for people like me without gardens, they can be grown on the balcony!\u00a0 By gardening idiots like me!<\/p>\n<p>Last week I dug out some pots and got my hands dirty on the balcony.\u00a0 I probably should have gotten photos of that if I wanted to document the entire process and prove that it was actually me that did it, but you\u2019ll have to take my word for it.\u00a0 I planted some of the lettuce and all of the beans and cucumber seeds, then I sat the pots in my dining room window.\u00a0 I assumed I had a week or two before I\u2019d see any results, which already irritated me.\u00a0 I have about as much patience as a four year old.<\/p>\n<p>I was shocked and amazed few days later in the afternoon when Xander called me into the dining room, telling me that my seeds were sprouting.\u00a0 I had just watered them that morning and saw nothing, and a few hours later I had all these plants peeking through!<\/p>\n<p>This is what I have after two days.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Bean Plants Sprouting\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/36166632@N00\/4645986032\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/static.flickr.com\/4033\/4645986032_6cdaf8c73b_b.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Bean Plants Sprouting\" width=\"595\" height=\"411\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The beans are spouting like <em>magic<\/em> beans. I\u2019m pretty sure I\u2019m going to be able to climb these stalks in a few days and spy on my neighbours!<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Cucumber Plants Sprouting\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/36166632@N00\/4645986392\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/static.flickr.com\/3413\/4645986392_ab6f4a5825_b.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Cucumber Plants Sprouting\" width=\"595\" height=\"393\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>All four of the cucumber seeds I planted have sprouted as well!\u00a0 They are not quite as impressive looking as my bean stalks but I think that might turn around later once we start seeing actual cucumbers.<\/p>\n<p>Then there\u2019s this\u2026<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Waiting On The Lettuce\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/36166632@N00\/4645372561\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/static.flickr.com\/4013\/4645372561_927b0a0347_b.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Waiting On The Lettuce\" width=\"595\" height=\"405\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>My lettuce.\u00a0 Not a sprout to be found. Zilch, Nada!\u00a0 I assume it\u2019s because the seeds are like, microscopic and it\u2019s going to take a while.\u00a0 Just in case I planted a few more a little more shallow to see if they come up quicker, perhaps I put them a little too deep.\u00a0 I am mentally tapping my foot at this pot!<\/p>\n<p>I guess it won\u2019t be long before I have to replant the plants that are growing so that they have more room.\u00a0 That will be an entirely different adventure.<\/p>\n<p>One thing though&#8230; I was so chuffed with myself when I saw the sprouts coming through, I forgot that I actually have to keep them alive!<\/p>\n<p>Shit\u2026<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A while back I got a package in the mail from Xander\u2019s step-mother which included seeds for growing cucumber, lettuce and beans.\u00a0 Not just any old kind, but the urban kind for people like me without gardens, they can be grown on the balcony!\u00a0 By gardening idiots like me!
