{"id":2273,"date":"2009-05-16T09:07:24","date_gmt":"2009-05-16T07:07:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.breigh.com\/wordpress\/?p=2273"},"modified":"2010-01-26T09:07:27","modified_gmt":"2010-01-26T07:07:27","slug":"double-standards-much","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.canadutch.nl\/blog\/archives\/2273","title":{"rendered":"Double Standards Much?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ok, so yesterday I wrote about a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.breigh.com\/wordpress\/archives\/2257\" target=\"_blank\">teacher who was canned from her job<\/a> because she decided she didn\u2019t want to shake hands with men anymore.\u00a0 Apparently, she made this decision for religious reasons and that didn\u2019t really jive with the Dutch way of life.<\/p>\n<p>Now today I read this article over at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dutchnews.nl\" target=\"_blank\">DutchNews.nl<\/a> about a teacher who was suspended for being gay:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h5>Christian school suspends gay teacher<\/h5>\n<p>Friday 15 May 2009<\/p>\n<p>A strict Protestant primary school has suspended a teacher after he admitted he was homosexual and had found a partner, local tv station <a href=\"http:\/\/www.omroepgelderland.nl\/web\/Nieuws\/nieuwsartikel\/272021\/School-Emst-homoleraar-niet-welkom.htm\">Omroep Gelderland<\/a> reports.<\/p>\n<p>The school&#8217;s board said the man&#8217;s sexual orientation conflicted with the school&#8217;s ethos, the broadcaster said, quoting a letter to parents and pupils.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;The board respects the teacher&#8217;s choice but that choice of relationship conflicts with the foundation and aims of the school which he accepted as a teacher. This means the working relationship between the teacher and our school cannot be continued,&#8217; the letter states.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So it\u2019s not ok for a teacher to refuse certain practices based on his or her religious beliefs, but it\u2019s ok for a school to refuse work to a teacher based on theirs?\u00a0 Oh hell no.<\/p>\n<p>In the Netherlands it is legal for gay couples to get married, they can adopt children and they are recognized as honest to goodness partners the same as heterosexual couples.\u00a0 If, as stated in the previous article about shaking hands, the purpose of teachers in Dutch schools is to prepare the students for the Dutch culture and labour market, why is this any different?<\/p>\n<p>Seriously!
