{"id":1812,"date":"2008-11-07T19:52:48","date_gmt":"2008-11-07T17:52:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.breigh.com\/wordpress\/?p=1812"},"modified":"2010-05-26T21:05:07","modified_gmt":"2010-05-26T19:05:07","slug":"decorating-early","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.canadutch.nl\/blog\/archives\/1812","title":{"rendered":"Decorating Early"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"Decorated Rotterdam\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/36166632@N00\/3010932726\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"341\" alt=\"Decorated Rotterdam\" src=\"http:\/\/static.flickr.com\/3225\/3010932726_e9a91aa905.jpg\" width=\"455\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Today while I was in town I took this photo of the Christmas decorations in the city center.&#160;&#160; Everywhere I turn there are people complaining about Christmas decorations and items being out already, but I honestly couldn\u2019t be happier about it.&#160;&#160; I think here in the Netherlands we are slightly early as well because we have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.breigh.com\/wordpress\/archives\/572\" target=\"_blank\">Sinterklaas<\/a> in early December.<\/p>\n<p>I have become completely obsessed with Christmas, I admit it.&#160;&#160; The thing is though, as an expat Christmas can be extremely difficult.&#160; For the first few years I found it so hard being away from my family and friends.&#160;&#160; When Christmas would come I would be a ball of nerves and there wasn\u2019t anything I could do to stop myself from feeling miserable with homesickness.&#160;&#160; I know I did it to myself but it\u2019s hard sometimes, to stop yourself from dwelling on the things you miss on such important occasions.<\/p>\n<p>After a while I realized I had no choice.&#160; I could either keep dwelling and making myself and everyone around me miserable during the holidays, or I could do something about it.&#160;&#160; Doing something about it meant creating new traditions and finding a way to create Christmas here in Holland for me and my family\u2026 which wasn\u2019t easy since our immediate family here in Holland is basically just the two of us compared to the large family gatherings back home.<\/p>\n<p>We did it though, it\u2019s just on a smaller and more intimate scale.&#160; Now I look forward to buying Christmas presents, filling out my Christmas cards, sitting and enjoying some <a href=\"http:\/\/www.breigh.com\/wordpress\/archives\/585\" target=\"_blank\">appelbeignet<\/a> with hubby, decorating the tree, cooking (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.breigh.com\/wordpress\/archives\/157\" target=\"_blank\">and naming<\/a>) our turkey\u2019s, and decorating our home.&#160; All these things have made Christmas something to look forward to with someone I love, rather than something I dread because I\u2019m missing other people I love.<\/p>\n<p>Last year (and hopefully this year too) we have extended our little family Christmas tradition to include <a href=\"http:\/\/www.breigh.com\/wordpress\/archives\/758\" target=\"_blank\">my best friend and her husband<\/a>.&#160;&#160; This year there will be yet another addition, their son Noah!
