For my example I used a long tail cast on and Jeny’s Surprisingly Stretchy bind off.

Knot Stitch – When working row 19 of the knot stitch section, be sure to work the ( ) bracketed stitches loosely to ensure you can work them properly in the next row. If necessary, you can knit row 19 with a larger needle and switch back for row 20. When doing the k3tog tbl on row 20 I often found it easier to go into the first two stitches purlwise in the front, then swoop my left needle under and around the right needle to then catch the third loop in the back before knitting them all together though the back loop.

Finishing Instructions– Whirl yarn can vary slightly in regards to the weight and amount of yarn included in a ball. For this reason, and also due to your personal tension possibly being slightly different, I am giving finishing instructions rather than a set finishing point, so you can get the most out of your yarn if you wish.

If you would like to use as much of your yarn as possible, you can stop at any Garter Stitch Border section, stopping after the last right side row (row 37 or repeat of that row) and then casting off in place of your final wrong side row in that section. In my sample, I cast off at the end of the Garter Stitch Border section after the Right Side Leaning Eyelets, so my cast off was in place of Row 66.

If you would like your shawl to end in the way it began, so that you end on a section which looks mirrored to the beginning of your shawl, you will want to stop at row 37 and work your cast off on the wrong side instead of row 38.

Instructions

CO 135 sts

Starting Garter Ridge
Row 1 (rs) Kfb, k to 3 sts left, k2tog, k1.
Row 2 Knit to end.
Row 3 Repeat row 1.
Row 4 K5, purl to 5 sts left, k5.
Row 5 – 8 Repeat rows 1 and 2.

Knot Stitch Section
Row 9 Kfb, k to 3 sts left, k2tog, k1.
Row 10 K5, purl to 5 sts left, k5.
Rows 11-18 Repeat rows 9 and 10.
Row 19 Kfb, k4, *(k1, yo, k1) into the next st, sl1 wyib;
