At least that’s what comes to my mind when I think of it and that’s definitely what I see when I look at this cover!

When we were first told about this theme, I knew I wanted to contribute because there is no better time to do a little colour work than this. So, here is my contribution, the Alpine Resort Tunic. This is my very first garment design, which was certainly an adventure (I will write about in a separate post), but I’m really proud of it and I love how it turned out.

This tunic is knit from the bottom up using stranded colourwork in the round and uses a combination of Scheepjes Stone Washed and River Washed yarns. It is designed to have a loose, comfortable fit which is nice to wear over shirt on a cool fall or winter day.

The pattern is available in sizes Small – XXL and with the easy to follow instructions and chart, it would be easy to resize if you wanted it smaller or larger than the sizes provided. For reference, the model in the photos is wearing a size medium.

This is a bit more advanced than some of my other patterns, as I would consider it to be more of an intermediate level. That said, it’s still not difficult for a knitter with the knowledge of the basics, who wants to practice colourwork and learn a little bit about making a garment.

To be honest, though, I don’t think anything is out of the scope of the more adventurous and determined beginners, especially if they aren’t afraid to jump in and ask for help if necessary. So if you like it, give it a go! What’s the worst that can happen? The great thing about yarn is that you can always start over again, right?!

HANDY SKILLS TO KNOW FOR THE ALPINE RESORT TUNIC:

Basic knitting stitches (knit / purl).

Knitting in the round / magic loop.

Increasing and decreasing.

Picking up stitches (pick up and knit).

Stranded colourwork techniques.

Assembling knitted pieces.

This design uses stranded colourwork both in the round and also with some parts worked flat. Learning skills ahead of time, like how to carry your floats and how colour dominance works, will be beneficial in making sure your project works out the way you want it to. While I don’t have tutorials on these here on my own blog, there are some really great ones out there with a quick Google search.

As I mentioned earlier, this project was such an adventure for me and such a learning experience in so many different ways. I plan to write more about all of that later as it’s sort of its own story… things like how I came up with the idea, my trials and tribulations along the way, how real life can affect the designing process. So much to tell!

I also want to dig more into the other projects I really like in this issue, as there are a few which I definitely plan to make – and some of them are crochet! Oh my word, that doesn’t happen very often. While I am bicraftual, I definitely lean more heavily on the side of knitting, so you know these crochet projects are special if I see them and think MUST MAKE.

You can see all of the patterns included in this issue here on Ravelry and decide which are your favourites, but you will have to wait to hear about my faves when I come back in another post.
