{"id":1617,"date":"2008-09-14T10:26:22","date_gmt":"2008-09-14T08:26:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.breigh.com\/wordpress\/?p=1617"},"modified":"2010-05-26T21:42:27","modified_gmt":"2010-05-26T19:42:27","slug":"bathroom-reno-part-2-toilet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.canadutch.nl\/blog\/archives\/1617","title":{"rendered":"Bathroom Reno Part 2 &#8211; Toilet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The second part to the great bathroom renovation was our little toilet closet.&#160; Quite the norm by European standards but it freaked me out for the first while I was here.&#160;&#160; It literally is a closet just big enough for me and my toilet.<\/p>\n<p>The weirdest thing for me in the beginning was the toilet shelf.&#160; If you\u2019ve never been to this part of Europe you probably would have never experienced it, and that\u2019s not a bad thing.&#160;&#160; I never did take any photos of our old toilet, probably because I was embarrassed and disgusted by it.&#160;&#160; I didn\u2019t want anyone to know I had a toilet with an observation deck.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some photos I pulled off the net to show you what I mean.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.breigh.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/toiletshelf2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"toiletshelf2\" height=\"180\" alt=\"toiletshelf2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.breigh.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/toiletshelf2-thumb.jpg\" width=\"240\" align=\"left\" \/><\/a> Here, you see?&#160; A shelf.&#160; I really wasn\u2019t kidding.<\/p>\n<p>You don\u2019t notice anything really abnormal about it until your first poo, then it hits you.&#160;&#160; That\u2019s the moment when you get the full impact of the toilet observation shelf.<\/p>\n<p>Your poo is sitting there in a pile, ripe and ready for your inspection.&#160; For me, this wasn\u2019t really necessary\u2026 but I guess there are circumstances where it comes in handy.&#160; For example, if you were a drug smuggler or if you have a child who is in the habit of eating things he shouldn\u2019t and one day he gets his hands on your wedding rings.&#160;&#160; I prefer to think that these are the things the Dutch had in mind when they brought these toilets into play.&#160; Not that they just enjoy being able to inspect their feces regularly.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.breigh.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/toiletshelf1.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"toiletshelf1\" height=\"127\" alt=\"toiletshelf1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.breigh.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/toiletshelf1-thumb.gif\" width=\"370\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The above photo shows you the difference between a normal toilet and the observation shelf toilet.&#160; Apparently they have them in Germany too because I know the word Flachspueler isn\u2019t Dutch, at least I don\u2019t think it is.<\/p>\n<p>In any case, you get what I\u2019m saying.<\/p>\n<p>The Dutch are very good about giving you handy tips about the toilet shelf though.&#160;&#160; When I first arrived here and commented about the odd toilets, one cloggy was kind enough to tell me that if you put toilet paper on the shelf before having a poo, it flushes away easier.&#160; Good to know!<\/p>\n<p>So, in renovating our toilet room\u2026 the toilet observation shelf was the first to go!&#160; My poo was to be hidden in a pool of murky toilet water an paper where it belonged.<\/p>\n<p>I didn\u2019t take a \u2018before\u2019 photo of our toilet but I did remember to start snapping photos part way through.&#160;&#160; Probably due to the excitement that the old toilet was gone.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.breigh.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/toilet2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"toilet2\" height=\"480\" alt=\"toilet2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.breigh.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/toilet2-thumb.jpg\" width=\"360\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.breigh.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/toilet1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"toilet1\" height=\"480\" alt=\"toilet1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.breigh.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/toilet1-thumb.jpg\" width=\"360\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>At this point the toilet was out and we had ripped out the ugly yellow tiles (the same as the ones that were in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.breigh.com\/wordpress\/archives\/1578\">shower<\/a>). We had also started building the wooden frame to build in the pipes.<\/p>\n<p>Oh yeah that\u2019s another thing I forgot to mention.&#160; Here the pipes are all outside the wall, again \u2013 probably practical.&#160; Still though, it\u2019s BUTT UGLY.&#160; So in both the shower and the toilet we had them put into the wall.<\/p>\n<p>Some plastering, new tiles, new walls and a NEW NO-SHELF TOILET later, this is the final result.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.breigh.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/tbrush.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"tbrush\" height=\"480\" alt=\"tbrush\" src=\"http:\/\/www.breigh.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/tbrush-thumb.jpg\" width=\"404\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.breigh.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/toilet5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"toilet5\" height=\"303\" alt=\"toilet5\" src=\"http:\/\/www.breigh.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/toilet5-thumb.jpg\" width=\"404\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>That shelf now has a basket of toilet paper and a few reading materials sitting on it, but otherwise it all looks mostly the same.&#160; There\u2019s not much more I can really say about it, I mean it\u2019s a <em>toilet<\/em>.&#160;&#160; I guess it\u2019s a much more pleasant place to poo now\u2026&#160; especially now that I don\u2019t have to look at it!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The second part to the great bathroom renovation was our little toilet closet.&#160; Quite the norm by European standards but it freaked me out for the first while I was here.&#160;&#160; It literally is a closet just big enough for me and my toilet.
