Nitch

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!!!  Would someone please tell Paula Abdul that there is no such word as NITCH?!  I swear, every time that dumb bitch opens her mouth I want to scream, but when she says You have found your NITCH’ I want to go all unibomber on her ass.  GAWD!!  How do they let her continue to do that?  I honestly don’t get it..

Yeah I’m still watching American Idol again this year.   I said I wouldn’t but my curiosity gets the best of me every time.   I think this is going to be a good season though.

amanda I’m so glad they voted this one off.   I hated her hair.  I know that’s a petty thing to dislike about someone because I happen to hate my own hair at the moment too, but still, it bugged me.  Not nearly as much as her voice though.   I don’t know what the word is for the way her voice sounds.

Nasal?

No, nasal isn’t right, does anyone know the sound I’m thinking of?   What would you call it?  It was like she was putting on some weird voice when she sang, rather than what he voice really sounds like.  Shit, that’s gonna bug me now.  Anyway, I hated her.

I think there are a few good girls this season, even though I think this season is going to go to a guy.   I like Carly Smithson and Brook White (HELLO! She’s from Halifax originally, I hope all you Canadians are voting for her!). Syesha Mercado is alright too.  There’s another blond but I don’t really care about her either way.

What I’d like to know is, who is Ramiele Malubay blowing to stay in the competition?  The girl CANNOT sing and yet she slips through every week.  I wish this was like America’s Next Top Models or one of those shows where you see all the behind the scenes dirt, because I’d bet the farm there is a reason why she’s still on the show, and it isn’t talent.

michael I feel sort of dirty because my favorite contestant isn’t even American.

Shouldn’t there be some sort of rule where the people who are on American Idol should be, oh I dunno… American?   I guess just living there is enough.

I can’t say I care that much though because he’s easy on the eyes, he can sing like a bandit and he actually picks cool songs, unlike many others..

The accent doesn’t hurt either.

Neck and neck with him would be David Cook, another one that is easy on the eyes and can really sing.   I think I’ll be really disappointed if either of these guys ever come out and sing Stevie Wonder.

I had massive hopes for David Archuleta in the beginning, especially after hearing him sing Imagine by John Lennon.  After a few weeks have passed I really just think he’s too young, and a little too immature.  He’s a little kid with big ideas and he keeps choosing these songs with a message, which is cool I guess, but he’s a teenager… sing something a little less deep sometimes.  I dunno, I think it’s the bashful thing that is starting to get on my nerves too.  Nobody is that cute.  He’s getting to the so sweet it makes your teeth hurt stage.

OH yeah, I forgot the guy with the dreads… Jason Castro.  Totally the kind of boy I would have had a crush on in high school.  Oh hell, I do now… but am I the only one who thinks he’s a major stoner who just can’t muster the energy for anything other than laid back croony kind of songs?  Enough already… your blue eyes and cute smile can only get you so far, mister.

Right, it is ON this season…

  1. Sorry I still disagree wholeheartedly.

Katie – just saying you are a professional write and former teacher doesn’t mean much. Give some research to back it up. Where does it say that “nitch” was the English language’s original intent? Just because it says it in an American dictionary, doesn’t make it true. It wouldn’t be the first word Americans have bastardized and claimed as their own. Hell, I use many of them… just not this one :P

Oh and this season of AI is terrible, really really terrible. Although the new female judge gives me hope of them starting the process of squeezing out Paula.

  2. Hi all –

I just came across this string. I’m a professional writer and former teacher, and the word is, actually, pronounced “nitch”. That was the English language’s original intent, anyway.

“Neesh” is a recent construction – made popular by sales people and motivational speakers who wanted to sound fancy or like they know French.

So today, both proununciations are widely used and accepted. However, when I hear someone say “neesh,” their credibility gets knocked down a few notches in my book. It’s like saying “epp-ih-toem” instead of “uh-pit-o-me.”

As in: This conversation is the epp-ih-toem of neesh.

Hope you’re enjoying this season of AI.

  3. Link please! Oh, and let me guess, you’ve been saying nitch for years? :P

Check out what Urban Dictionary says about it!

    http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=nitch

Guess that makes it correct, seeing as I found it in a dictionary and all.

  4. Correction: Due to a typo I must correct myself. I meant to say “while researching the word nitch as a variant spelling of niche.”

  5. Came across your rant while researching the word nitch as a variant spelling of nitch. According to Webster’s New International Dictionary, second edition (1945; which I’m certain predates you by several generations) nitch has long been a variant spelling of niche.

I find it interesting that those who accuse others are usually most guilty of what they criticize.

So who’s really the “dumb bitch” with the open mouth, eh?

  6. When are you coming home again so I can slap you around a bit :P

Besides, I think Dave is way crazier. He does the robot in his red undies, I would never do that lol

  7. Yeah but this is an older crazy woman and a younger man.

    Oh… wait…

    :P

  8. Older woman, younger man, I don’t see the problem! hahaha

  9. Naw, I don’t feel sorry for her. I hear she was outrageous on that reality show of hers.

Today I was listening to Howard Stern and they were talking about how the team at American Idol actually take extreme measures to keep Paula away from the talent and even have a code name for her when they are trying to get her away from the guys ‘Mrs. Robinson’. No lie!

So not only is she nutso, but she’s old and pervy too! :P

  10. I think I more feel sorry for her than like her. I just don’t hate her at least. She does comes across as such a flake, but I think that’s why AI keeps her. Randy is the more average guy/dog, Simon is a bastard (love him tho!) and Paula is the flake. It’s like a trio of different people who seem to mesh somehow and ya don’t wanna mess that up.

  11. Don’t care, I still hate it!

I don’t get how anyone can like Paule Abdul, she’s ridiculous!

  12. OMG lol, talk about a lot of moaning & groaning over the mis-pronounciation of one stupid lil word. I have heard people say “nitch” when pronouncing niche and have heard it many times here. Poor Paula. I don’t know why people hate her. She’s a lil out there, but she’s harmless and tries to be as nice as possible to the contestants. All you cynics, tsk tsk.
Tammy, we come from Cape Breton, the land of making up your own words or combining two to make one.
    How quickly she forgets :P

  13. I could pronounce Poodle as Hamburger and if I got enough people to start doing it too it would end up in the dictionary. That doesn’t mean a poodle is a hamburger.

I’ll still never agree to niche being said as Nitch, no matter how many dictionary links you throw at me :P

  14. Actually, it can be pronounced “nitch” or “neesh”

    http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/niche

America: Butchering the English Language since 1776.

  15. Josi, she -is- an idiot for saying it like that and so is whoever taught you it was an acceptable pronunciation. I could see if she was saying Neetch or something like that, but Nitch is nowhere even close to it.

I really am curious to see if any English speaking countries other than America say it that way. I don’t think I’ve heard it pronounced that way when I was in Canada but that could have something to do with all the French there or something.

I just think it’s silly to just make up another way to pronounce a word because people can’t be arsed to pronounce it the proper way. When I came here to NL and said OH look GOOH-DAH (Gouda), is that where the cheese comes from? I was quickly schooled on the proper pronunciation haha and why not? Just because in North America it’s said Gooh-dah, doesn’t mean it’s RIGHT.

I’m sure my English is far from perfect but there are a few GLARING examples of people pronouncing things wrong , and by god, NITCH is one of them. :P

Not Afraid – Omg I know, right? I mean I thought it was frustrating when we couldn’t make out what she said but I think we were better off. She must have one hell of a lawyer because I can’t imagine for the life of me why they haven’t replaced her yet.

Oh lord, and don’t get me started on that new video…

  16. THANK YOU for this post. I choked when Paula mispronounced the word. I prefer her drunk and slurring her words. At least that way she’s got an excuse.

  17. The first time the word niche was ever introduced to me at school, I was told there were too ways to pronounce it: the French way, which obviously is the original, but also “nitch” which just as acceptable. It’s just a matter of what you’ve learned to use. Calling someone a dumb bitch beacuse they say “nitch” is just idiotic.

  18. haha I know what the word is Lance :) I was just writing it the way she pronounces it. It is not said NITCH, the word Niche is French and said (crap I can’t figure out how to write it the way it sounds)… Neesh?

I don’t know if this is something that is different in different places in the world but by god, in any place I’ve ever lived it was never said NITCH.

I get the feeling it’s one of those things that North Americans just say the way they say it and demand it’s the proper way to pronounce it. Like Gouda cheese, which originates from here in the Netherlands and is not said GOODA at all (with a hard G the way it’s said in North America) but G (rough, gutteral Dutch g)-ow-da

I dunno, these things just bug me. The same as people who say IRREGARDLESS. THERE IS NO SUCH WORD AS IRREGARDLESS PEOPLE!

  19. But that’s the problem, Lance: Paula’s not saying “niche” and that’s what’s annoying! It’s like when people talking about “cliques” and they say “clicks”.

I think Breigh knows Paula’s trying to say “niche” but after what, SEVEN YEARS, she still butchers the word!

  20. The word she’s saying is not “nitch” it is “niche”. While Paula overuses the word, it in fact means “a place, employment, status, or activity for which a person or thing is best fitted”.

But instead of saying “that style fits you perfectly”, Paula tries to sound a lot smarter than she is.

  21. Oh yes she still says it, HOW I have no idea… I mean aren’t there like, producers or some people around who can tell her that isn’t really a word in the English language?

I could see if she said it once or something but she says it at least 3 times each show. It makes me insane.

  22. She *still* says “nitch”??? I don’t know how you can continue to watch this show! If the performances are any good, I’ll just watch those on YouTube.

  23. Bad hair caused by genes or the climate is one thing. PURPOSELY giving yourself bad hair is reason enough to vote Amanda off. If I were a Dalmation puppy, I’d be nervous. *shudder*

And for those who say it should be about the music — oh puh-leez. It’s never been about the music.

    ;P

  24. Hi Breigh.

“I feel sort of dirty because my favorite contestant isn’t even American.”

Let me remind you that real Americans do not almost exist now. There are just few people from the original tribes. All people which are nowadays said to be “Americans” are just foreigners living there for some time. No difference between 200 or 2 yrs. Are you real? ;)

Btw your blogs looks good. Did you do it yourself? The header, plugins, …?
