Shopping With Men

Honestly girls, why do we keep attempting to do this?   I know my husband hates shopping but I still drag him with me when I need to go.   Of all the wife-lessons I’ve learned, this is one I consistently have trouble with.   Not that I go shopping all that often of course, but when I do… by god he’s coming with me!

It always follows the same pattern, we’re both in a fairly good mood going in.   Within a few minutes his eyes glaze over and I usually end up standing there going “Hey what do you think of this?  Hey!  Xander, what do you think of this?  THIS, What do you think of it?!”.

I will give him some credit, when I do finally regain his attention he will be honest with me if he doesn’t like something, which often tends to be something I DO like.  So I’m left conflicted and wishing I’d just left him in his dream world, where he was probably back in his office playing World of Warcraft.

As I said, I hate shopping at the best of times, ESPECIALLY clothes shopping.   After one or two outfits my face starts getting red, after one pair of can’t get up past my hips and thighs pants, I start to sweat.   This is when I start getting cranky and have no patience for … well, anything.   I just want to find something that fits and doesn’t look like I’m wearing a mumu and get the hell out of there.

So, what does it do for my mood when I have a disgruntled husband follow me around?  It’s not good, not good at all…

I’m bitch at him, he sighs.
I bitch at him for sighing at me, he says nothing.
I have a Jack-from-Will&Grace high pitched moment asking him why he just sits there and says nothing when I’m obviously upset.
He looks bewildered and starts trying to think of the right thing to say, while already forming a Plan B – looking for a place to hide.

Then we go home, without whatever it was we went there for in the first place.

So why do I do it?  Why do I try to get him to come with me when the safest thing for us both is for me to go alone, get what I want, do it at my own speed and keep my mouth shut because even if I am frustrated I have nobody to bitch at?

Beats the hell out of me… and I can’t even say I won’t ask him to come with me the next time.  Misery loves company I guess!

  1. The problem, at least for me, is the fact that I used to take my mother shopping with me. We’d go to a store and she’d throw stuff at me into the dressing room. It was a team thang…and I do miss that.

Her absence is missed even more because I HATE squishy Dutch stores and the mess and the chaos and the lack of anything for women who aren’t shaped like a string bean.

I think Thursday night shopping nights in Haarlem are the most stress-free…although still not totally…

  2. Ha Ha..I go threw the same thing with Edwin..I make him come along with me like he’s a girlfriend I can shop with..lol

  3. LOL! Oh hun, I do the same thing! And it only got worse when we threw a short fused toddler into the mix. Hubby gets on my very last nerve the quickest in a mall….honestly, I could stand and ask the wall for advice and find the answer more insightful than hubby’s ;)
