Hot Dog Dilemma

Ok, now this just ticks me off.  Who thought hot dogs could cause so much confusion and hassle.

Euro Dogs

When I first moved here I found it so totally bizarre that they kept their hot dogs in bottles and cans with water… and not refrigerated.   I was used to hotdog’s in a plastic package in the cooler section.  How do these hotdog’s not go off?

Eventually I got up the nerve to eat some of these weirdo wieners but there was something else standing in my way… there were no buns!

I looked high and low, scouring the bread section of the supermarkets and there were no hot dog buns to be found anywhere.   Why do they have hot dogs and no buns?!  Screw it, I didn’t want them that bad.

After we moved to our new flat and started going to a different supermarket I found hot dogs that were actually in the cold section.  A plastic package with two hot dogs with buns.  I was a happy camper and they were my hot dog fix for years.

Since Project Fatass has started up again I’ve avoided the hot dogs completely.  Which hasn’t been hard because I really only ever wanted them every couple of months anyway.   Last week I decided to try vegetarian hot dogs.  They are vegetarian, that must mean less calories, less fat… they are the healthy choice, right?  WRONG!

When I got them home and was making them (using toasted bread as a bun ffs because they didn’t come with buns, goddamn freaks) I had a look at the nutritional value and almost dropped a non-vegetarian load right there in my kitchen.   I ate them of course, and managed to fit them into my day but DAYUM!

Afterwards I looked up regular hot dogs by a popular company here in NL and they had the nutritional value on their website.  Not only were the vegetarian hot dogs higher in calories (almost twice as much, what the H-E-Double-Hockeysticks?!), but they were also higher in fat. *Sigh*

I guess they aren’t meant for the fat vegetarians.  So yeah, if you are like me and automatically assume vegetarian = healthier in every instance, think again.  Your wieners may be deceiving you too!

  1. Weird, my impression of bread in NL was that it is ALL hotdog buns. So much sugar in Dutch bread.

ANyway, I developed a taste for broodje unox, have you given them a go?

  2. Hot dog buns are on sale this week at C1000 and they are in the regular assortment at most AHs.

HTH I hate having a craving that I can’t fill.

  3. Why can’t you just use “pistolets”? You can buy them at most bakeries and they taste way better than hot dogs buns.
