Kitchen Demo

Well our kitchen has been demolished.  It’s been a bit of a pain in the ass and I’m stressing out every step of the way but here’s what has taken place so far.

Messy Kitchen

This is our kitchen the first day we started dismantling it.  Obviously, extremely cluttered and messy… it was hard finding places to put things from the cupboards but we managed.   You can see I wasn’t kidding when i said we had a small kitchen!

Jan in the Kitchen

On Saturday this is what was left.  I couldn’t believe it when I saw what was waiting for us behind (and under) the cabinets when we removed them.  Good grief!  They really did just sort of slap this building together… have these people ever heard of PLASTER?!

The guy in the photo is Jan, he did our bathroom renovations and did a great job so we’ve hired him to give us a hand with the kitchen.  He’s ripped down all those ugly grey tiles and will be coming back Thursday to fill in the floor and plaster the walls.

I hate that we have the water boiler in the kitchen, but I’m going to have to suck it up and get over it because it’s not going anywhere.

Delivery Truck

Yesterday this truck arrived with our new kitchen.  I was surprised to see such a huge truck for such a small kitchen but I figure ours wasn’t the only one they were delivering that day.

Elevator

Since we live on the 3rd floor and don’t have an elevator, they brought along another truck with a cool elevator thing that lifted the boxes up onto our balcony.

The new kitchen!! - sorta

Now our new kitchen is sitting in boxes in our livingroom.   My dishwasher is in there somewhere and I can’t use it yet, argh!!

Fridge & Oven unit

errr… except for this one, which currently sits in our partially gutted kitchen because it was too big to get around all the corners into our diningroom.

Fridge & Oven Unit

That huge box contains the unit that will hold our oven and our fridge. The guys totally killed the rails for the screen door in our bedroom trying to get that monster inside.

You can see the horrid pink trim around the door and window in our bedroom.  That’s been here since we moved in… we’ve gotten rid of it in the rest of the house but the bedrooms are next on our list of renovations.  Until then we are stuck with it!

Well that’s all I have as far as updates go.  The bulk of the work will be happening on Thursday and Friday when the plastering and kitchen installation takes place.

The one big cockup so far, I still haven’t chosen the tiles I want and the only ones I’ve found that I like will take anywhere from 2-8 weeks to arrive… and here I thought I’d planned everything so well!

I could get tiles right away but they’d be cheap (and look cheap) and I want something nicer than that.  I think I want stone tiles, to add to the country kitchen look… so I may have to live with a partially finished kitchen for a while until they arrive.

I still have a few places to look at though, so maybe I’ll find something a bit sooner… I hope.
