Road Trip!

Ok, road trip is probably exaggerating but considering how long we went without a car, our day yesterday felt more like a road trip than anything we’ve done in years!

We went to visit our friend Erwin who has just returned to the Netherlands after living in Germany for the past nine years.  He has moved to a place called Egmond aan den Hoef which is just outside Alkmaar, about a 1.5 hour drive from our place in Rotterdam.

It was a beautiful day for a drive, the sun was shining and everything looked so nice.   There were a lot of things I wish I could have gotten photos of but when you are driving on the highway it’s not so easy.  I’ll know to have my camera out ahead of time the next time we make the trip.

It was great to see Erwin again and to see where he’ll be living.  It’s far too rural for us but it’s perfect for him.   He’s surrounded with farmland, tulip fields and he has a lovely old windmill not too far from his house.

We had to leave fairly early to get home to take the dog out.  So on the way home we stopped to have dinner.  We stopped at a really cool place just outside Amsterdam on the A4 called the Brugrestaurant (Bridge Restaurant)

It’s a big bridge that spans across the A4 motorway and it’s filled with different restaurants.  Burger King, La Place, KFC, a wok restaurant, a bbq grill restaurant and a few others.

It was really cool!  You can sit inside and watch the cars zooming back and forth beneath you and they have all sorts of different kinds of food so there’s something for everyone.

We ate at La Place, which is usually a restaurant inside the V&D shops.  Xander had a big dinner salad and I had salmon and roasted potatoes.  It was delicious… but we were both absolutely starving so that probably added a tiny bit to how great we thought it all was.

We’ll definately be stopping there again next time we are traveling in that direction!

  1. That restaurant is so cool. I have never even thought of that concept. I also noticed a drive thru there? What a memorable experience it must have been.

He lives by tulip fields? What a beautiful thing to have nearby. I’d imagine those flowers would cheer someone up immediately.

  2. Road trips are great!!

  3. I would have a hard time not to press my bare butt up agaist the glass and moon everone driving by.

  4. La Place is one of my favourites. We often go to the one in V&D, in fact just last week. I love their salads and their doorstep sized ciabattas. It’s hard to explain to people just how fantastic the motorway restaurants are here in Holland!
