The Quilting Bug

Last winter I took a quilting class with another expat girl I know.   I know it sounds like something only old women would enjoy, but it’s actually quite nice.  It’s relaxing to sit and sew in front of the TV and such.   I don’t have a sewing machine yet so I do it all by hand.

exampleI ended up missing the last 2 classes because I was sick, so I didn’t learn how to finish the quilt.

This is a photo of the quilt our teacher made to show us how ours will look in the end, which is all I really had to go on.   I never did get it all done and it’s been tucked away in a drawer for the last year.

Yesterday I dug it out and after visiting a friend in the morning I stopped off at the shop where I took the lessons.   The lady who owns the place gave me instructions on the next step to putting it all together so I’m going to try to get it done.

This is an example of some of the squares I have finished.  I have all nine blocks done now, but don’t have photos of them all. Now I will put them all together along with the edging, then move on to the actual quilting.

First though,  I’m going to make this Christmas Star Tree Skirt, which will be the first time I’ve followed a pattern all on my own. I bought the fabrics for it yesterday.

Tree Skirt FabricsThey are somewhat similar to the colors I’m using in my first quilt, which is just sort of coincidence since I chose the colors for that one but the tree skirt calls for these colors.   Plus, they will both match my livingroom!

I’ll post updates as I work on the tree skirt, that will get priority since I only have until x-mas to get it done, yikes!

  1. I love to quilt. I especially love to sew by hand. You squares look beautiful. Can’t wait to see the tree skirt.

  2. Stunning quilts! I came here looking for a photo hunt picture and found myself “dreaming” about quilts.

  3. Wow you have done a great job on your first one. The tree skirt is going to be lovely.
I have my one I made 20 years ago and it is the same as the day I made it.

  4. Gorgeous! Man I wish I could do that!

  5. Nice quilt! I am impressed that you have done it all by hand. I do all of mine by machine but I have one where I have been trying to hand sew it. I only have one block done!

  6. good luck with the quilt, I love the colors. I’ve been wanting to take up quilting or knitting but never really had the time let alone the patience. Can’t wait to see the finished product… keep us posted with pics

  7. Your quilt pieces are so nice! All by hand, too??

I don’t know about quilters, but I can tell you that me and many of my fellow knitters here in Houston have multiple tattoos. Tattoos and/or piercings. No grandmas in the bunch. :) Crafting is sort of a punk rock thing to do… it’s anti-estabilishment to create your own instead of “buying” into mass consumerism. Besides that, it’s pretty.

I can’t wait to see more quilting updates…I love me some handmade gear.

  8. VERY cool! I’m ashamed to say I have a work in progress that’s lastest 5 years or more now lol It was the first quilting project I ever attempted…I shoulda gone with a cushion cover or somethin’.

Occasionally, I will get it out of it’s box and throw it over the bed, all three layers pinned together with about 200 small safety pins. It’s awfully warm on the bed during the winter I must say. Probably all those pins lol

I’m done with it, I just want it finished and have been thinking about throwing it in one of those places that do the machine quilting to get it over with lol.

Here’s a link to a couple of pics I posted last year if you want to see it.

It impresses and amazes me the patience and dedication that quilters put into their work. It’s almost like an addiction. I only went with squares, it ALL had to be squares or I wouldn’t even get as far as I did lol I don’t think I’d have the patience let alone the skill to be doing those fiddly little triangles you’ve got going on there. lol

I look forward to seeing it finished :)
(Ack, sorry ’bout the novel here)
