The Pain of American Idol

So many of us are watching American Idol and simply don’t know why. We watch it, think how dramatic and silly it can be, but are still glued to our screens whenever it’s on. I won’t try to get into the whole human nature thing and why we feel the need to see it, all I know is I really really enjoy it even if it pains me at times to watch them pull those poor people through the wringer.

I honestly can’t be arsed to go through every single contestant and tell you what they sang and how it went for them. I mean chances are you are watching it and already know anyway, and if not you probably won’t waste your time reading my thoughts on something you know nothing about. Plus some of them are just so damn boring they aren’t worth wasting my time writing about. They would be all the ones who chose songs by Stevie Wonder or Celine Dion… blech!! Way to leave an impression guys. Some did really make an impression though, the ones who make you remember their names.

Bo Bice: This Week’s Favorite

One of the two rockers put through to the final 24 contestants, Bo Bice didn’t really catch my eye until he performed on Monday Night. He sang “Drift Away” and absolutely rocked the house. Even Simon couldn’t say anything bad about his performance and actually praised him. He stepped out on stage as a nobody to me and by the time he stepped off I was clawing at my monitor wanting to crawl through and grab him. Definately a good start for him in the competition!

He IS a rocker though, will he be able to keep up with the other pop kiddies in the competition later when they have a more limited song selection? I have my fingers crossed!

They Also Left Their MarK

Now this is one girl who left me going “Whooeeee!” She is HOT! Unlike the other croony bitches she came out and gave us a blast of “Power of Love” by Ashley Cleveland. I’ve never heard this song before but I’m sure the original singer couldn’t have done it better herself. Her stage presence was amazing and unlike a lot of the other girls she didn’t appear to be nervous at all. Her talent and stage presence together with her fabulously unique look are going to get her very far in this competition.
I think this girl will go all the way to the final three, at least! I wouldn’t be at all shocked if she wins the entire competition.

Ok I know I complained before about the croonie bitchies but this one is an exception. My god does she have a beautiful voice. Tuesday she chose to sing “Could’ve Been” which not only did I absolutely love when I was a teenage girl, but still do. She’s confident, pretty and has a really nice quality about her… but does she have the sex appeal that they are undoubtably looking for? I don’t know if she can shed her sweet country girl image. I guess time will tell!
I think if she can manage the variety and not just stick to country, she’ll do great in the competition. Again, at least the top three.. because her voice certainly isn’t going to hold her back.

Is he cute or what?! He can sing too.. bonus! Again, not one I really noticed from the start but his performance on Monday evening was amazing. He chose to sing “Do I Do” and much like Nadia, he owned it! What I like about him is that he has his own style which is something that jumps out and says “hey, remember me!”. It’s the hats, I’m sure… Either way he is an extremely confident performer and I’m sure he’s getting millions of votes from teenage girls all over America. Shit, who am I kidding.. I’m sure the older women are digging him as well.
Definately top three material. If he keeps up with his cool style and confident ease on stage, he’s going to own this competition.

Now this is one guy I remember from the very beginning. He is soooo sweet! Every time I see him on the show he has this really gentle smile and of all the contestants he seems the most real to me. He teaches music to kids and seems to really love what he does. He’s an incredibly talented musician, there’s no two ways about that. I think he’s one of those teachers most of the girls probably have a crush on, but he’d be really nice to them and sweet about it. Monday night he chose to sing “Moon River” which I would have turned my nose up at if anyone had just told me about it. He did a wonderful job though.
Again, top three for sure. I love this guy!!

It’s Not Too Late!

Constantine Maroulis
Age: 29
New York, NY
Oh my precious Constantine.. how disappointed I was to hear him sing “Kiss From A Rose” on Monday night. Egads!! I think if he had done that on the original tryout they probably wouldn’t have even taken him. The ONLY thing that really saved him was that so many people already love him from the previous shows. Including me! It’s not too late for him to make a comeback from that poor performance. The stress will be on for him next week though, he will have to really do something great to redeem himself. Another badly chosen song could be the end of him. Hope not!
Top three? Doubtful, like with Bo he IS a rocker and I am not sure of his flexiblity. We’ll see!

Mikalah Gordon

God, this girl! I hate when women make their lipstick bigger than their lips! I also get the feeling she’s had more plastic surgery than most girls her age. Great personality though, definately has the “show biz” bit down and has a good voice. She bounces back and forth between cute and annoying, just like Simon said. The talking to the judges during her songs has to stop. First time it was really funny, second time it was cute.. now it’s just getting to seem like a desperate tactic to keep the judges on her side. Needs to grow up a bit and learn when she’s overdoing it on the “personality”.
Good voice, great stage presence… if she chills out a bit she might make it to the top three.

Ugh… Get Lost!

Can .. not… stand.. this guy!! I don’t know why but when I see him come on stage I groan. He comes off as all shy and sweet but there’s some kind of vague pompous air about him, I can’t explain it. He’s one of the croonie bitches as well, he always chooses the saaaaame kind of song and is so dramatic about it… like Monday’s selection of “Hold On To The Night”. Sure he has the voice but uggggh, I just imagine him standing somewhere serenading some woman while she rolls her eyes. I really wonder if he’ll be able to shake it up a bit when the time comes, I have my doubts.. I’d love to see him voted off, but I’m sure chicks everywhere are voting for his skinny blond ass.
Top three? Gawd I hope not!

Janay Castine
Age: 17

Right now, don’t let the door hit you on the way out! Did anyone else notice that she was moving like a robot during “I Wanna Love You Forever” on Tuesday night? Sure ok she was nervous, that explains the voice problems but my god she had her hand all flat moving it around, it looked like she was trying to chop her own hip off. Can’t explain what I don’t like about this girl, it just exists and I was really disappointed when she didn’t get voted off. I would have much rathered see her go than Sarah Mather who was voted off simply because of a rotten song selection.
Down with Janay!! Get your ass gone girl!!
Top three… please, please no!

So that’s my thoughts on this weeks show. It will be interesting to see how my opinions change of people as the weeks go by. How sad am I to have such an active interest in this show really… but who gives a shit, it’s highly entertaining.

The only thing I really hate about it is that they drag everything out so long. As if there is not enough content so they keep going over the same points again and again and again. They drag out all the decisions just to fill time, so a 2 second announcement takes 5 minutes. That really bothers me.. I can only imagine what it’s like for people in the US who watch it and actually have to wait for all those “Right after this break..” moments. I have to download every episode so at least I get it commercial free.

I don’t like how they make the “losers” sing either. It must be so damn hard to stand up there and sing a song that got you booted off the show. My heart was breaking for Sarah on Tuesday evening when she had to sing the song they just spent the last 5 minutes completely trashing. You could tell she had no interest at all in singing it but had no choice, poor girl.

Oh, and Coke must be paying some big bucks towards this show because it’s being pimped everywhere.

  1. I think Paula is sometimes too nice, Simon seems like he is overly harsh sometimes just for fun.. but I mean that’s part of why most people watch the show. They LOVE Simon and his shitty attitude. Randy, I think, is the best of the three. He won’t say he likes something he doesn’t, but he doesn’t club them over the head with it either.

Oh and what the heck was with that comment by Simon to Amanda? “The one thing I do know if I come back in another life I want it to be as your microphone” or something like that. Wow, that was tasteless.

  2. Holy writeup Breigh! Photos, even! Hehe…

People complain about Simon’s comments, but to his credit, I don’t find him that harsh — only rarely in all the shows that I watch did he really lay it on, and it was usually deserved. And, it’s all relative because Randy and Paula’s comments are usually not very descriptive, and Simon’s are generally much more constructive.

    Let’s judge the judges! :)

  3. They do have bands, they left them to try it out on American Idol and see if they can make it. :P

  4. I’m not sure you can be a rocker unless you have a band :p nor for that matter if you are a real rocker while you still do covers (too many years of listening to completely unknown garage bands at small gigs had an effect on my taste :p ) but I’ll grant you at least the selection seems to have grown.

But American Idol doesn’t get shown in South Africa, we had one season of UK Idol, and then a couple of South African Idol runs. All of which sucked, and I have little doubt there will be zero
rock in the SA Idol edition. After all in three years of Idol in South Africa they still haven’t had a single Kwaito song !

In fact, I read an interview with the director of the local program in which the question was asked and he actually said the following.
“We will never allow an orriginal song on the stage here, we are looking for people who can do what international pop stars like Celine Dion and Britney Spears do, not any other kind of music !”
That was when I decided I will never watch their show !

Still to each their own. You’re welcome to enjoy the show if you want, it was even entertaining to read your write-up, but commercial music of any genre has never been my scene.

  5. I never thought I would watch this show either, but I got hooked last year with William Hung. Yes, I know how sad that is…but I loved him. I did. He was so positive, despite the ability to take sucking to a new level.

Good write up! I almost feel like I have been watching it all along now…despite having missed all the beginning crap while away on holidays.

  6. Hey you’d be impressed this time though. There are two rockers-to-the-bone type guys and one chick. Not everyone is a Britney wannabe, there is actually some variety this year. (Not that I’ve watched in previous years but whatever)

You should be watching and cheering for the non-Britney’s like I am! :D

  7. I take pride in never having voluntarilly watched any idols program. The fact that I despise all the songs they sing helps, the fact that there is no room for true talent (e.g. song creators) and it’s merely a stage for who can be the most like Britney helped as well.

I did see one auditions day, when my then gf’s mother insisted on it, and got into an argument with her (which was nothing strange we NEVER got along and I was a lot less mature back then – sheez almost 3 years ago)

So why am I bothering to write this ?
/me goes to have his head examined.
