FOAD Thursday – Stupidass Smoker Jokes

It’s Wednesday and I’m writing this now and pre-dating it for Thursday as my very first FOAD Thursday post, because I know if I don’t by tomorrow I’ll forget I was ever pissed off about it.

I decided to join in the Foad fun when I came across a post on someone elses blog that reminded me of something I hate so fucking much it makes me want to throw people down and kick them ’till they bleed.

….after hours of beer, convo, and our own personal attempt at giving ourselves lung cancer…

Smoker jokes. Smoker jokes about cancer… Does smoking really cause cancer? Who the hell knows… I know it certainly doesn’t help if you DO get it… but I’m starting to think it DOES cause stupidity!

Maybe I’m oversensitive about this subject. I lost one of the most important people in my life to lung cancer, my grandmother… and she never smoked a day in her life. The same goes for my friend Gail and her husband David.

.. but fuck, what makes people find this funny? Joking about smoking and how they are trying to give themselves cancer? Am I missing something? Is this one of those things where only people who belong to the ‘Smokers Club’ can crack cancer jokes and the rest of us just totally miss the boat? Sort of like how black people can say ‘nigga’ but white people can’t? Please, someone enlighten me.

I’m not stupid, I know they aren’t actually trying to give themselves cancer, but it’s just in such bad taste and is not even remotely funny. Not to me anyway and I’m sure it isn’t to other people, whether they’ve lost someone to cancer or not.

It’s like dead baby jokes, who finds this shit funny?

I like to believe I have a pretty good sense of humor, but this all totally escapes me.

So smokers, if you are going to crack cancer jokes about your filthy habit, please… do us all a favor and FOAD.

  1. Hello All,

I was reading around some of the posts here and I found interesting things that you guys talk about, I just made a blog about quitting smoking resources and ideas that you might want to check out.
If someone is interested in this topic just go to; http://endthehabitnow.blogspot.com and let me know what you think. Your honest feedback would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

  2. I smoke every day, yes i joke about it, but smoking has nothing to do with the deaths of your loved ones. Lung cancer must run in your family genetically.

  3. It’s an addiction just like an addiction to crack, meth, alcohol whatever. In fact, if you ask an addict, they will tell you smoking is the hardest to quit. I’m a smoker myself. Do I crack cancer jokes? Certainly not. But I’m tired of people telling me, “Why don’t you just quit?” Because it isn’t as easy as one may think. No one says a word about alcohol/alcoholism yet it’s an addiction as well as a disease. My grandfather and an uncle were killed by drunk drivers. And why do we start anything that’s bad for us? Out of curiosity. Simple as that.

  4. I think on the whole, most smokers aren’t aware that they’re doing it. As an ex-smoker, I’ll say that’s probably why.

Smoking really needs to be taken care of like any other addiction, like drug addiction or alcoholism. Perhaps someday.

  5. Excellent FOAD. I think people are just basically thoughtless. Making a remark like that just means that they aren’t aware that someone is sensitive to the subject. They probably have not been impacted directly by cancer. But I have to admit that every time my sister (who always said I’m NEVER going to smoke) lights one up I remind her it’s 7 minutes off her life.

BTW. I hated Technorati too until I deleted my blog then re-claimed it. It actually worked the second time around. And I am a BM fan, I just don’t like their “games.” :) I’m hard to please . :) Welcome to the FOAD club!

  6. Good FOAD… welcome to the “club”… and yes… I smoke… and yeah… I talk about saving up my Marlboro Miles for my “Iron Lung”… and yeah I should FOAD…

  7. The thing I don’t understand is that why people would start smoking in the first place because it causes so much problems. Forget cancer, with cigarettes, there are numerous ways you can die. Cigarettes have been known to cause birth defects, cancer and they are one of the majour causes of house fires. It’s not funny to joke about these things, true, but it is a good idea to make people aware of the dangers of smoking.
