They’re Everywhere!

Isn’t it typical that just when I am starting to think about trying to lose weight, I am being haunted by KFC?  -  It’s EVERYWHERE!

Yesterday I got up and checked my favorite celeb gossip site and saw a write-up about how Oprah has Americans everywhere running to KFC to use the printable coupon she’s offered on her website.

oprah

For whatever reason, in an attempt to promote healthier eating, she is giving people a FREE Grilled Chicken Two-Piece Meal.  I didn’t even bother to look to see if it was available here in the Netherlands, I know better.

Then I went on Facebook and saw a friend of mine posting this video of some guy breaking down the ingredients KFC and how it turns your brain to mush.  No idea who he is but he reminds me of Sam from Private Practice.

He schooled us all on MSG and the nerves in our brains and how if we keep eating KFC one day our brain is going to leak out our ear.   He also gave Oprah a verbal whipping about how she is not promoting healthy eating at all, rather is giving in to corporate blah blah.  Watch the video if you are that interested.   He definitely sounds like a smart guy, but seriously?    If people want some free KFC, let them have it.   It’s not every day you get a free meal, so more power to ‘em I say.  Also, as for not taking advice from someone like Oprah who struggles with her weight.  I dunno man, she may gain weight a lot but she loses it a lot too.  She may know more about losing weight than some skinny dude on YouTube who never has to deal with estrogen.

Oh, and he said that if Oprah ever asked him on her show he’d say no… *CoughBullshitCough*

Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure he’s right on a lot of his points… but so are the people who say tap water is bad for you, and the air you breathe, and milk.  It’s all about moderation.

This morning I woke up again and sure enough, one of the first things I saw?  KFC!  I was over at Avitable’s blog and he was one of the people who did go and get the free meal.   He even made a video of him trying it.

avi

He wasn’t just trying the grilled chicken but it was his first time ever trying KFC at all.  I know, I was as shocked as you are.  I figured most people in North America had tried all different fast food places at least once.  Then again, I have never tried Arby’s, even though people rave about it.   His reason for never trying KFC is because of the bones.   He doesn’t like any meat that has a bone in it, which I can understand.

Anyhow, he didn’t dig the grilled chicken meal.  Even went so far as to say he wouldn’t recommend people get it even for free.  So at least now I don’t feel like I’m missing out on anything.

A little later this afternoon, I was watching the latest episode of Gary Unmarried and what do I see?!

garykfc

Yup, that’s right.  KFC AGAIN!

They are really pimping this grilled chicken.  Is it because it tastes as bad as Avitable said or because it’s new and they want to get it out there, I wonder?   They even did a little blurb in the show that went like this:

Sidekick: This is not KFC.
Gary: Uh, yes it is. It’s the uh, new grilled chicken.  You’ll like it.
Sidekick: It’s so tender. You can taste all the herbs and spices!

Another thing I wonder, is Gary Unmarried doing that badly in the ratings that they have to do these ridiculous product promotions?  Good grief.

I have a question for the expats in NL.  There is one piece of chicken you get in a bucket, it doesn’t have any bones in it, just this one sort of triangular piece of  cartilage, and a heaping pile of white meat.  In Canada we called it a keel but I don’t know what it’s called here in NL.  I’ve tried asking in KFC here but they look at me like I’m nuts.   I probably should actually HAVE the piece when I ask them…  Does anyone know what that piece is called here in Dutch?!

Anyway… all I know is, I like KFC, I wish they had gravy here like back home, and I think they are stalking me.

  1. Ohhh Arby’s sounds good..lol I havent tried the KFC here yet but maybe at some point we will. I got sick from eating at the McDonalds in the U.S. but I don’t here. I notice even though it’s fast food,it’s not as greasy here.

Sonyas last blog post… Easy Tuna Fish Cakes

  2. I had a major KFC craving all during my pregnancy and ended up gaining at least 70 pounds in nine months. Luckily, I haven’t craved the shite since.

Except the gravy that makes your fry stand up on end. Yeah. That was lekker.

We had an Arby’s back home. Yawn. When your mom makes real roast beef once a week on Sunday, there’s just no reason to seek out some fake stuff on a bun without yorkshire pud.

  3. Suzy – Gary Unmarried is good but not spectacular. I’d rather see the actor back on Ghost Whisperer. It’s definitely not on par with shows like Big Bang, HIMYM, etc, but I’d say it’s sort of like According to Jim or King of Queens. Entertaining but not anything you really get hooked into for any reason. It’s a half hour of entertainment.

Paule – Oh I don’t doubt that guy knows what he’s talking about. I did find him a little excessive though. I don’t think Oprah was trying to pass KFC off as being HEALTHY as much as trying to give people a HEALTHIER option than the regular KFC. Sort of like, well if you are going to go anyway, why not try THIS instead. Either way, I still think he’s full of shit about saying no to her if she asked him on the show. I wish she would just to call his bluff :P

Penny – If you mean the dense sort of tea biscuit like biscuits, I’m not with you on that one. I find them really dry, it’s like having a mouth full of wet cement hehe

Zhu – Oh I love KFC. I only like one of the pieces of chicken (the keel I mentioned earlier) but their sandwiches are really good. Especially the Zinger Burger. I think KFC is slightly different here though. In Canada I wasn’t too keen on it but here I love it. Also, when my parents were here in October we went there and my parents were sort of hesitant, but we had it and then dad asked to go again just a few days later. They raved about how much different it is here than back in Nova Scotia. I’ll have to try KFC again when I am back in Canada and see if I find a difference.

  4. Sorry, but if it’s one thing I can NOT eat, it’s KFC. Just the smell makes me sick.

Note that I don’t mind a burger once in a while, that I like McDonalds’ fries and I would kill for chocolate cake. But KFC??

I don’t even think of the fat, or the calories or whatever. I just physically can’t eat it. I find it gross.

    Maybe it’s cultural!

  5. Miss the gravy and the biscuits for sure!
I agree it’s all in moderation. I’m sure lots of things we eat are not good for us. As long as we are aware they aren’t good for us and don’t eat them all the time, then fine by me.
Damn, now I want biscuits and gravy :(

  6. The guy above, Sean from http://www.undergroundwellness.com, is a cool guy with a lot of knowledge. He has a load of really informative stuff on his youtube channel and his website. He gives advice on stuff he is studying without being patronising and without the bullshit. Please check his youtube channel. He gives loads of advice on wht to eat and why/how we store fat. Unfortunately it is information the large food companies would rather us not know.
Haha I’m rambling again, sorry :)

  7. Hi Tammy,
The heaping pile of meat sounds like the chicken breast–the only piece I ever want..lol..cause I can get that chunk of white meat and not have to scavenge the bone–ick!!

…and is Gary Unmarried really good? I’ve not watched it. I like How I met.., Big Bang and Chuck for comedies these days. Is it anywhere on par with those?
