Twilight – The Story I Hate to Love

twilightbookI recently decided to pick up the wildly popular series of Twilight books.  I’ve heard so much about them but always had other things I wanted to read first.  When the movie came out, I felt a bit pressed for time, because I really wanted to see the movie, but not without reading the books first.  I like to be able to make up my own images of people in my mind before they are shown to me on screen.

A friend read the books recently and raved about them.  She went beyond raving though, into a place that I’ve never seen someone go over a book before.  Honest to goodness depression that the story was over.

Could it be that good, seriously?  They are ‘teen romance’ books after all.

Little did I know what I was in for *sigh*… from the first moment I opened the first book, I was completely hooked.   For the following three days I was incommunicado.  I actually bought the first book, so I could read it wherever I was, but when I finished it I was so hooked I couldn’t wait to start reading the next, so I downloaded it… and the one after that… and the one after that.

My friends didn’t hear from me, except the ones who have read it, so that I could blab my thoughts on the story to them.  My husband wondered if I was ever going to come out from behind my laptop for something other than food, toilet breaks or sleep and I’m pretty sure I didn’t bother to shower or answer the door or phone the entire time.  It was bad… really bad.

I didn’t realize how much worse it could get until I was finished reading them… and then I understood what my friend meant when she said she was so depressed now that it’s all over.   I was devastated!  Suddenly I was thrown back into the real world and I didn’t want to be here.   I wanted to live in Bella’s world where you are never alone, there is always someone watching over you and protecting you… where the family of the one you love accepts you and loves you wholeheartedly even though you are different… A world of lullabies and baseball in the rain.

I wasn’t there though.  I was sitting at home, alone… my dogs were bugging to be fed, there was laundry to do, I hadn’t figured out what to make for dinner yet, there were bills waiting to be paid and my hair was in that annoying ‘growing out stage’.  It fucking sucked.

Twilight is an amazing story, but it’s quite dangerous too.   It has a way of dragging you into a perfect world where even the most impossible things can seem real.   When it’s over and you close the book, you are left sitting and hating everything real about the world you live in.   Where the love you feel is real but will never have the force or excitement of the completely unrealistic (but desirable) form of it you just read about.   Where everything takes so much more effort and every relationship you have seems to be missing something by comparison.   It’s scary that a story in a book can have that affect on people, but it does and I know I’m not the only one.  I’ve visited a few fan sites and by the looks of things I am (believe it or not) among the more mildly affected.  Frightening thought.

Edward and Bella. Forbidden love at it’s best.

If you’ve not read this series, you (like I did when my friend tried to explain it to me) couldn’t possibly understand, but if you have – I know you’re with me on this.

The world created by the author is one of the purest kind of love.   Not just that but it’s a forbidden love, and we all know that the forbidden fruit sayings exist for a reason.   Put that together with unconditional acceptance, excitement and magic… how can anyone ever finish this story and not feel a little disappointed to be back in the real world?

This is all what makes me love these books, and hate them at the same time.  They are like a drug and they affect you in a way that I’ve never experienced with any other book in the past.   They stay with you, even days after you’ve finished them you can be driving down the road or watching TV and the characters will flash into your mind for no real reason.  It could go on forever and you’d still be left wanting more.

Crazy, right?  I know… even as I write all of this I know how ridiculous I sound… but that doesn’t stop it all from being true.

Our first glimpse of sweet Jacob

So anyway, Saturday my friend came over and we watched the movie together.  Both of us hopping with excitement in our seats as it began.   I know, it was hard to believe we were both over 30, but I guess we’re all still teenage girls at heart…

I was disappointed.  I was disappointed to be disappointed!   I knew that they had no chance in hell of fitting everything into the movie that was in the book, but they really could have done better.

First, the things I did like.  I love the people they chose to play all the parts, they were perfect… (although I did sort of imagine Alice to be more like Daisy Adaire from Dead Like Me).   I loved being able to see these beloved characters “live” and sit there and gush during the parts where they DID get it right.  I loved that for all the parts they left out, they didn’t forget the scene in the meadow, which was one of my favorites.

There were a lot of things I found wrong with the movie though, and they deserve a bullet list.

  • The field trip.  What in the hell?  There were so many bits and pieces to fit into the movie, why make up an entirely new scene that didn’t even exist?  I hated that.
  • They didn’t get across just how intense the relationship was between Bella and Edward.  You knew they wanted each other and that they wanted to be together, but it came nowhere even close to what you experience in the book… where they love each other so intensely that neither of them know how to cope with it.  Where the world isn’t even worth living in for them unless the other is in it too.  Where they actually say it to each other.   Their love is the foundation that the story is built on, and the book goes quite in depth explaining what exactly these two feel for each other… but in the movie it’s just not there.   That was so disappointing for me.
  • Bella’s reactions.  When you read the book you understand that the majority of the reactions Bella has towards Edward stem from her own insecurity and that this makes her nervous around him.   She is worried about losing him, but is never afraid of him or being around him, which I found was the reaction she seemed to always portray in the movie.
  • There wasn’t enough of the Cullens.  Some of the best parts of the book are when she is with the them!  For example, the scene with her, Alice and Jasper in the hotel.  That was shortened to almost non-existance in the movie.   None of her true bonding with Edwards family happened in the movie, and that is sad.
  • Edward’s mind reading and his competition weren’t much of a part in the movie.  In the books he gets quite a lot of competition from the guys Bella goes to school with and it’s a major source of irritation for him, but that wasn’t an issue at all in the movie.  In fact, the people she went to school with may as well have not even existed, even though they made up a big portion of the story in the book.
  • Angela and Eric? Huh?  Wasn’t she with Ben?
  • Victoria had flaming red hair – FLAMING!!  Not red – ish.
  • They didn’t really show any of the true relationship between Bella and her father.  None of the way she took care of him was shown in the movie, she pretty much just lived there, and that was it.

Oh James, bad boys always are so hot.

Ugh, there’s just so much… I could go on forever.   If you were to imagine the Twilight story as a beach, the movie was just one grain of sand.   They really should have made a miniseries out of it or something.  I’m going to stop harping about it now though.   Even while we were in the process of watching the movie my husband laughed at us. He also pointed out that we were worse than the Trekkies or Lord of the Rings weirdos.   I can’t argue, it’s true.  We’re absurd…

… but you can best your ass we’ll be first in line when the next movie comes out!  Even if, like Twilight, it pales in comparison to the book… we still won’t be able to stop ourselves.   We’ll take any scraps we can get.  Plus, I really want to see more of Jacob.

  1. I guess we are in the same boat about the movie. There is a point I’d like to add though. After seeing the movie, you feel like, “My god!!! I can imagine the story in my head better than this.” Some parts were cool. But almost all the expression shows by the characters are just plain wrong!!

  2. “They really should have made a miniseries out of it or something”.

I said the same thing to my husband when we left to theatre. I believe they could get away with trying again with this, a mini serious would be perfect I would buy the whole set if it was half as good as the books and I don’t even own any other movies.

I know these books are ment to be aimed at teenagers, but While I was reading I was reminded how it felt when my husband and I were dating, we had the same intense feelings, maybe because we “waited” if you know what I mean.

  3. I so understand the after-effects you felt after reading the series. I’ve only recently finished the first book but I know that I am completely hooked. I can feel it! “Once you pop, you can’t stop” and all that *sigh. I keep getting those random urges to talk about Twilight to every living being I come across. I was a skeptic in the beginning but after the first book I have been completely converted. I agree, there is a danger within these books…

    Hey Tammy,

I agree with everything you think and say about the Twilight series. I could not wait to put the kids to bed at night and get back to reading them. I never went through a series so fast and then felt so sad when it was done. I am like a big teenage kid at heart too when it comes to the Twilight series. I will also go see New Moon when it comes to the theatres. I won’t like it as much as the book but I will still give up my cash and go!

  5. Oh my God!
FINALLY, there is someone I can relate, too! I remember when the movie came out, and I thought how stupid the book and movie sounded. Until one night I picked up Twilight. I didn’t even know that it was Twilight, but on the first page I was completely addicted. It was so strange! I had never experienced the kind of emotions that I put myself through with this series. I felt so irrational, but I couldn’t help myself. I couldn’t put any of the books down. I was panicked to see the movie, and I was EXTREMELY dissapointed in it, but I still watch it over and over. I remember feeling so depressed that my life was the total opposite of the book. It was terrible. I still think about it every single day, even when I don’t want to. I will never understand the trance that this book has put me under. I hate it as much as I love it. But thank you so much for helping me not feel like such a maniac!

  6. I think that the film was brilliant and so were the books and i know how you felt when you put the book down but i have to admit that i thought that they done a great job even though they did leave lots of scenes out and added that greenhouse scene it’s they’re job to do so.

  7. I got the book on friday and finished it on saturday and already ordered the next one..lol I am not a huge fan of her writing in some parts but I AM HOOKED!!!

  8. I’m so glad it’s not just me that loves these books so much!

@Danielle – It’s not a vampire book like Anne Rice’s books or other ones. There’s actually VERY little in it about them hunting or that side of Vampire life. This is more of a romance than anything.

@Heather – I am going to get you to read these books, you must!

@Nicola – haha yeah it IS like a drug you are breathing in while reading it! As I said to Danielle, this isn’t your usual vampire books. While they are vampires and it is about their lives, there isn’t a lot of that vampire / fangs / drinking blood stuff in it. It’s more about them trying to be normal and fit in.

@Sonya – I can’t wait to hear what you think of it :)

@Roos – Oh my, how did you manage to wait a week in between?! haha

@Reileen – I also hope that the 2nd movie has a bigger budget. I hope that they think a bit harder about what to include in the movie as well. I’m glad we’ll see more of Jacob this time too!

@Edith – I actually watched Twilight again the other day and I didn’t find it quite as bad the 2nd time around. Once I knew what to expect and watched it knowing it for what it was, it was a lot better!

@mj – Yeah *Sigh* I did read Midnight Sun, it was SO GOOD! I loved how you saw so much more of what was going on through Edward’s eyes. Like how he got Angela and Ben together and what a mean spirited bitch Jessica really was. I can’t believe she finished it and didn’t share it with anyone but her sister. Grr.

  9. I can’t believe how perfectly you captured how I felt after reading only the first two books and having to wait for the third…depressed to be back in my own world where nothing compared. Now I know I’m not alone…

  10. I loved the Twilight books too…disappointed what the movie covered but nevertheless, Rob Pattinson as Edward Cullen is perfect!

Have you read Midnight Sun? Its Twilight told from Edward’s perspective. Heres the leaked 12 chapters of the book, officially put on Stephanie Meyer’s website due to the leak…well here you go, you can read it here http://www.stepheniemeyer.com/midnightsun.html

  11. I didn’t wanted to read the books, untill my friend send them to me.. And I was hooked straight away…When I was done with the first book… I read it again…. I didn’t wanted it to stop…

I agree with the movie, some of the best parts of the book where left out. But I always feel a movie is no comparison to a book. But yeah, as soon as the movie comes out, we will drag our asses to the cinema!

  12. Oh Breigh! I have read your site for awhile, and as a fellow Canadian ex-pat living overseas and married to a local, I have felt very sure of understading oyu on many occasions, but perhaps none more than this. My best friend posted me a copy of Twilight, and before it was over I was freaking out – and then downloaded the rest and read them on my computer too. I hear you in this post, girlfriend, about the intensity of it, and especially about being so disappointed with the movie. Here’s to hoping for a bigger budget for #2!

  13. I am soooo glad you have read the books- I was very curious to see what you would think of them!! I started with Twilight and within a week ordered the rest from bol.com.–> ‘The Host’ as well.
and indeed I’m checking out the different websites as well-daily–almost kinda embarassing! …but I am not alone!!
I ordered the dvd-should be getting it around the middle of April, but in the meantime I’ll have to do with what’s on Youtube!
did you read the ‘Midnight Sun’ diddy???

  14. I gave in and ordered the first book and it will get here this week..I can’t wait:) I know what you mean about being disappointed in the movies. I have the same thing with Stephen King. I LOVE his books but very rarely do the movies come across like the book. The Green Mile and Stand By Me were awesome but not so much for the rest.

  15. I was keen to find out what all the fuss was about too, till I picked a copy up in the book store, realised it was about vampires and put it straight back on the shelf. I don’t do vampires. My sci-fi/fantasy watching is very particular and limited (e.g. never seen Star Wars, but I loved Firefly) and vampires are always a ‘no’. But after reading your review… I’m retempted, just to find out what all the fuss is about between the pages! There seems to be some sort of drug smeared on the pages that people inhale while they’re reading lol. I’ll wait and see if I come across a copy I can borrow from a friend or something, but I might just try it out.

  16. Ah-ha! So that explains why you had no fear of walking into deserted, cobweb filled buildings…you were convinced some cute vampire would save you if anything bad happened! ;)

Maybe if her expectations are high, she won’t waste time with losers. Hey, I can hope, right? LOL

I don’t care for vampires at all, zero interest whatsoever. Dragons too, don’t float my boat. Robyn is really into the Eragon books as well, and alternates reading those and Twilight over and over again.

I like thrillers and such, but they scare the bejeezus out of me and I can’t sleep after reading! LOL

  18. Good luck then because she’s only STARTING with boys. She’ll never be able to think about men realistically now after reading about Edward and Jacob.

I can’t believe you haven’t read them, oh god they are so incredibly good… but it’s probably best for your sanity that you don’t haha

  19. Danielle Mutsaers

I have no desire to read Twilight, but I felt the same way with the Harry Potter series. When I was done with the last book I felt drained and exhausted, and depressed that it was over. I read it two more times before I could finally put it down. I think Robyn has read the Twilight series 3 times now!
