Read Between the Lines: Tips & Tricks Roundup

(Slice ‘O’ Cherry Pie and Green Tea Tipple)

Welcome to the RBTL + CBTL Make-Along! If you are here, it means you’ve decided to join us and make the Read Between the Lines shawl, the original design that kicked off this amazing journey! Due to the enthusiasm about these patterns, many people have already started working on them, but that’s ok because those of you who have waited will benefit from it as I have been gathering tips to share with you!

The above video was made by one of my lovely testers for the members of the MAL to see the two shawls together. Aren’t they wonderful? You can read more about the comparison of each of the shawls, how they work up and what their differences are here on my release post.

Ok, let’s jump right in! Ok, tijd om te beginnen!

Starting and Finishing Your Shawl
(Starten en eindigen van je shawl)

The middle bits are sometimes the easiest part of a project! Getting started can often be the most difficult part. Here are the things to consider when starting and finishing your RBTL.

Colour Choice (Kleurkeuze)

When I first released the original pattern I thought there were wrong ways to choose your colours. Since then I’ve seen so many shawls being made and there simply is not a bad combination. Somehow, no matter what you choose, it works. It just WORKS. So please don’t spend a lot of time stressing over the colours. Choose two cakes of Whirl you really love and throw caution to the wind! As long as you love the cakes, it’s all good.

The RBTL can be made with any combination of  Scheepjes WhirlWoolly Whirl or Frosted Whirl

(Blackcurrant Squeeze Me in opposite directions)

I’ve been asked a lot about using the same colour in two directions. Yes, this is possible. The only thing to be aware of is that you will have the same colour meeting in the middle of the shawl. This isn’t necessarily an issue and can create an interesting mirrored effect with the illusion moving into and out of the shawl. You can see this in the above photo.

Gauge Swatch (Draadspanning)

Please note: The gauge swatch for this pattern is done in 10cm x 10cm GARTER STITCH and not in pattern.

The RBTL requires compact stitches for the illusion to show properly, therefore, it is very important that you do a gauge swatch to ensure that your shawl will work out with the desired stitch definition and drape. Embrace the swatch!

Yarn Direction (Garenrichting)

If you aren’t sure which ends to start with, meaning which colours you want at the beginning or end of your shawl. One thing to consider is that you may have yarn left over in the end. The rows become very long, which means you may have a few grams left after not being able to finish a full row.

(Jumpin Jelly worked from the outside and Cotton Candy Man from the Inside)

If you have a colour you really love, start with that one, as this will ensure that you are able to use all of it in the shawl. The starting colours (the colours you cast on with and the start of the shawl) can be seen in the above photo in the red part of the shawl over the model’s shoulder, the finishing rows can be seen on her arm in purple.

Preparing Your Yarn (Je garen voorbereiden)

If you choose to work one or both of your colours from the inside of the ball, you may find it easier to rewind the ball(s) so that the inside colour moves to the outside, to prevent any issues with tangling or ‘yarn barf’.

The Beginning (Starten)

Some people, especially newer knitters or those who are not accustomed to working with circular needles, find the cast-on and first few rows difficult. In some cases, they have found that it is easier to start with straight needles and work until they have the pattern in hand, then switch to the circular needles. If you find you are having trouble getting started with thin yarn and circular needles, you may find this this helpful as well.

Many also find that bamboo or wood needles work best for this pattern as they are less slippery than metal needles.

Blocking

The RBTL must be blocked gently. The finished size of this shawl is very near the blocking size, so it should only be blocked to lay it out to shape and size and even the stitches a little. It should not be stretched as this could compromise the illusion effect, rather just lay it into shape, give it a pat and leave it.

Block with illusion side up into the below shape and measurements. The use of blocking wires also makes blocking this project much easier, as you don’t have to use a thousand pins. This also helps keep your edges tight and straight.

If you are unfamiliar with blocking, see this great tutorial from Kirsten at Haak Maar Raak. This shawl should be wet or spray blocked, not steamed. It’s advised to use a colour catcher in your water when blocking and always use rust proof pins.

Pattern Tips (Patroontips)

Here are a few tips that people have found useful when working on their RBTL. The videos are in English but for those of you who don’t speak it, the visual should still help.

Changing Colour and Maintaining a Tidy Edge (Kleuren wisselen en een nette rand maken)

I used a specific colour changing method combined with a slip stitch to create a tidy edge on this shawl. Here is some info to help with understanding how this colour changing edges works.

Above is a quick video I made to show how to do the colour change. The slip stitch and method for moving the yarn to the back is done in the same manner on the other end when starting your wrong side rows.

Another problem some people had was their colour changing edge working up tighter than the increase edge, and starting to curve. Above is another quick video to show how those edge stitches work and how to create a looser tension for a neater edge.

Knit Yarn Over Through Back Loop (kyotbl)
1r gedr (1 steek recht gedraaid breien)

The yarn over (yo) in the pattern is your increase stitch. When you see ‘kyotbl’ in the pattern, that means to knit the yarn over from the previous row through the back loop. This twists the stitch and prevents a hole in your work. Here is how you do the kyotbl.

After slipping your first stitch on the wrong side row, you get to your yarn over. It will look like the above photo, an elongated stitch that’s a different shape to all of your other stitches.

You simply knit this stitch through the back loop, or ‘leg’, of the stitch, inserting your needle as shown above and then continuing to wrap your yarn and complete the stitch like you would with a regular knit stitch.

Loose Stitches Between Knit and Purls
(Losse steken bij recht en averecht breien)

Some find that they get a loose stitch when switching between knitting and purling. This is easy to resolve by doing the following:

  • Knit last stitch in knit section.
  • Purl the FIRST stitch of the purl section.
  • Take yarn to the back as if to knit and pull to lessen the slack between the two previous stitches.
  • Yarn forward again and continue your purl stitches.

Most find that the transition from purl to knit doesn’t have the same tension issues as when going from knit to purl.

  • Brei laatste steek recht in rechte stuk

Mistakes Happen (Fouten gebeuren)

Mistakes can be a part of any project. Here are some ways to try to minimize the hassle associated with possible mistakes in the RBTL.

Using Stitch Markers (Gebruik stekenmarkeerders)

One of the main mistakes I see in this pattern, is people switching their knits and purls by mistake. The use of stitch markers between your stripes is very useful in helping you to recognize when it is time to switch. Stitch markers are placed on the needle and slipped from left to right when you come to them, and not through the stitch itself. I also advise using thin stitch markers as this helps lessen possible gaps between your knit and purl stitches. You can see my small stitch markers and the placement in the above photo. The pattern will tell you where and when to place your markers.

The Order of Things (Volgorde)

Another mistake I’ve seen a number of times is people not reading the pattern carefully and doing their colour changes or increases at the wrong time. Your colour change happens at the start of every right side row. Your increase happens at the end of every right side row.  Read your pattern very carefully and check your work.

The right side should look like the photo above showing the stitch marker. In each row, your garter bumps (seen in blue in the photo above) should be entirely in one colour, while your stockinette or “V” stitches should be all in the other colour. The “hills and valleys” are both different colours.

In this photo you can see a colour change gone wrong. There is no distinct difference between the garter bumps and the stockinette stitches, as, due to the colour change on the wrong side, both the “hills and valleys” have the colour change happening halfway through. This means you’ve gotten turned around somewhere in your work and (if you want the pattern to look as intended) you will most likely have to start again.

Adding Lifelines (Levenslijnen toevoegen)

Regardless of skill level, I can’t stress enough how helpful lifelines can be for this project. It is a very large shawl with a lot of knitting and it can be very easy to get distracted and make a mistake. Often, these mistakes are seen later when you lay your work down, rows back from where you are currently working. Frequent lifelines can help make fixing these mistakes much easier.

Above is a photo tutorial shared in our Facebook groups by Amanda from The Calm Nook Crafts, which shows how to place lifelines in your work. The text is in English but the visuals should show you what you need to know. Click the first photo to see a slideshow and learn now to preventatively add lifelines and protect yourself in case of mistakes. I suggest adding these more frequently the farther you get into your work, as the rows get longer. These take very little time and can save you a lot of hassle and heartache.

For mistakes that you find that are closer to your current work, tinking back is also an option. This is a method of knitting back, or unknitting, to undo stitches and redo them. Amanda has also made a handy video for our Facebook groups which show how this is done.

Checking For Mistakes (Check op fouten)

The best way to check for mistakes in your work is to lay it on a flat surface, get down low and look at the illusion lines. If there is a mistake where you switched your knit and purls, it will be more visible this way than trying to look at it from above. Do this. Do it often.

Affiliate Linking in This Post

In this blog post, I am using affiliate links. What that means is they are links that, when you use them to visit a shop and make a purchase, a small portion of that purchase goes to me. It costs you nothing extra but is a really wonderful way for you to support me as the designer! The way it works is, you click the link from this page and go to the shop, it looks no different to you, works no differently, but the shop forward a small % of the cost of your full purchase to me! Pretty cool, right? It’s a wonderful program set up by some of the Scheepjes retailers which can really make a big difference for us as designers. So, if you do use the links in this post for your purchases – Thank you so much!

  3. Hi, what needles are you using in your videos? TIA.
I knitted this on KnitPro Symphonie. I want to buy better needles. Wood is too sticky. Metal appeals.

    • Hi there! In the video I am using KnitPro needles as well, the nickel plated. They are what I had on hand at that time, but my favourite needles are ChiaoGoo Red Lace Twist. They are really, really great. The metal is lightweight, tips are perfect sharpness and the joins and cords are fab. Most people I know who have them prefer them to other sets. I have KnitPro nickel plated, KnitPro Symfonie, Addi Click and the ChiaoGoo and the ChaioGoo are my favourite by a mile. Hope that helps! :)

      • Hi am finding it hard to start the in between the lines knitted scarf it doesn’t look right I wish there was a step by step video I have spent hours tyring to perfect this

    • Sorry I mixed up which post it was on and first thought it was a video I used Symfonie but it was the nickel plated KnitPro. They are pretty good but the Chiaogoo are better :)

  4. Hi! Just starting Read Between the Lines today!
With color A, I have cast on 3 st and on row 1, I have knitted those 3 st.
On row 2, it has (Changing yarn)…am I still using color A?
It doesn’t say Yarn B until row 3.
I appreciate your video on changing colors! I understand that you change colors on every
right side even number row. It’s just the set up that has me confused!

    • Hi Linda! Yes, you change your colour every even numbered row starting on row 2. So you change at the start of row 2 as described in the video and continue on through the pattern. :)

  5. Where would I get the pattern for how to construct a dress from Read between the lines shawl pattern? I saw the knitted dress completed on the internet and it is beautiful. I would like to knit it if possible. If you have any information about how to construct a dress, please let me know? Thank You! Linda Hiles. I am from Franklin,NC. USA.

    • Hi Linda, the dress is not my design, although the lady who made it was inspired by the RBTL. I have spoken to her and I’m not sure if she plans to release a pattern or instructions for making the dress, she is still undecided. If she does you will likely see it shared in the Scheepjes FB groups or here on my blog. :)

  6. I’m usually a crocheter rather than a knitter, but I have horrible tennis elbow (too much crochet!) and because I knit using the ‘Portuguese method’ which puts no stress on the hands/elbows I’m really enjoying making the knitted version. Thank you so much for all the help, tips and inspiration

  7. Thanks for all the tips & tricks, soon i will start with the cbtl
