Ridin’ the Rails

train

Last week when I went to visit my friend Penny in Roosendaal, I realized that it was the first time I was on a train here in the Netherlands in over 2 years.  Since we got our new car!

I used to hate having to take public transit so much that when we got the car the long distance public transit came to an end.   I’d ride the trams and metro around the city as usual but if we had to go anywhere that took any serious amount of time or effort we were taking the car dammit! *Stomps foot*

I took the above photo on the train between Rotterdam and Dordrecht, where I had to change over.  It was a short ride so I sat near the door rather than going into one of the main seating areas.   It was somewhere around that moment that it dawned on me that I was rather enjoying the ride.

After a 2 year break from riding the rails in the Netherlands I’ve found a new appreciation for it.   Mainly because I was using it by choice rather than necessity, and that makes all the difference in the world.

I still prefer taking the car, obviously, but at least my bitterness and avoidance of trains has come to an end finally.

  1. I like riding the public transit in DK, but not so much in Montreal especially during winter.

  2. I remember being impressed by the train in Holland too. My worst public transport experience was Christmas Eve in Seoul one year. It was so packed that my feet were no longer touching the floor. Eeeek!

  3. I took a train from the airport into the Centraal Station…it wasn’t too bad, I suppose. I was so damn sick of sitting on the plane that I decided to just stand with my suitcase. But, I wish we had such sophisticated transit here – we have some, but, not quite as nice as in Europe.

  5. Lol i feel you i hate trains too specialy when you have that annoying person next to you, like the guy who speaks on the cell phone 24/7 or the mama with the wild kid or even worst!! the guy who gonna fall asleep on you, tho i am happy my train days are over since i dont live in greece anymore and here in sweden well i kind of live in the middle of nowhere so no train station for me YAY!

  6. I love the train, probably after all those years of fighting Toronto traffice I enjoy just sitting there and letting someone else do the work. There are times it is frustrating, especially when you have to base your day around the departure, but all in all I like to sit there and read. We did all our day trips by train this year and the trips averaged 3 hours one way. I managed to finish one book on a trip lol.
