First Time Owners

We are first time house owners.. this is getting more and more obvious with every step of “Operation Face-lift” for our new flat. We started out with these big dreams, thinking the money we budgeted into our mortgage would allow for these grand designs. Now after a few months we’re figuring out what desperately needs attention compared to what would just be nice to do differently and what we really like compared to what we like but not so much that is cheaper. We’re also learning how to “Rob Peter to pay Paul” as my mother always says. Saying things like “Well if we just get the 3-slidey-door shower doors instead of those really cool ones that swing both ways then we can afford tiles to get the toilet done over too” or “Well if we don’t get new cupboards in the kitchen and just get the dishwasher and a new storage unit we can put the wood floor in the spare room”. If only money did grow on trees like I always thought it did when I was younger.

I must say though, we’ve not done too bad with our money so far. We’ve gotten rid of all the pink in our main livingroom/diningroom area and most of the hall (I still have two doors to paint) and we have some lovely new pieces of furniture that I really really like. I’ve always wanted a hutch (that’s what we call it in Canada anyway, the thing with the big glass doors) and am absolutely thrilled to finally have one. Since we got married we’ve had things in the house in boxes because I was too afraid to put them on shelves in case the cats knocked them off (like they do with everything) or in case Xander did (which is just as frequent). Now they are all displayed proudly in my hutch!

The guy is just finishing up his 2nd day working on our bathroom. It’s currently just cement walls with some pipes in it… It will be nice to see when the walls are plastered and the new tiles put on. I can’t wait *claps excitedly*

The other day Xander said to me… “Can you imagine being the guy who puts fudge in the boxes in a fudge factory.. you’d be the FUDGE PACKER!” Just a random funny there, it just came into my head… I love him, he’s so silly.

Today my upstairs neighbour (the chronic phone borrower/weed smoking chickie all my guy friends dig the shit out of) came to the door in a panic because one of her cats was missing. She has three cats and has come to the door about 10 times in the last year saying her cat was missing only later to find it hiding in some spot in her house, so I didn’t take her too seriously at first. After she had four people looking through the house and not finding it, the verdict is that it’s definately missing.

Apparently they went out last night and forgot to close their balcony door (eep) and when they came back they realized he was gone when he didn’t come crying to the door. Now she is terribly upset, as I would be too if one of my shedding, litter tracking, whining… I mean, adorable .. cats went missing. The thing is, they live on the floor above us, which is the fourth floor and she kept asking me if a cat could live if it fell that far. It’s not like I have a habit of throwing cats off balconies (although I’ve considered it one or two thousand times).. so I couldn’t really say. I lied though, and said it was totally possible and made up stories about a friend’s cat that fell out of the sixth floor and lived. I mean isn’t that what friends do? You gotta know when to lie..

  1. Well the bathroom and the toilet are different here. We have one room with the shower and sink and another room with just the toilet. Weird euros!

While the shower is being redone I shower at the neighbour’s and Xander can shower at work.

When the toilet is being done we’ll just have to hold it :P

  2. So here’s a question: where are you guys going while the bathroom is being renovated??
